Anything that I write on the subject of weight loss has GOT to include facts. Not supposition. Not opinion. Not argument. Not pie-in-the sky. None of that. I said “facts”, and I am talking about proven facts on the subject of diets and weight loss.


Fact #1: Diets are not a permanent weight loss solution.


Fact #2: Even a “good” diet is usually mis-handled. (Okay, one opinion.)


Fact #3: You won’t get there without exercise.


Fact #4: In place of a “diet” you need to substitute good nutrition.


Fact #5: Almost everything else is a helper or a hindrance.


Fact #6: You need your own weight loss program, not somebody else’s.


A DIET IS NOT A PERMANENT WEIGHT LOSS SOLUTION


It is well documented that dieting, that is removing certain things from you normal list of foods you eat or eating only certain foods, does not work as a permanent weight loss solution. The explanation of this could be the subject of a book itself, but to make it short, you get bored, it’s hard to stay on the diet, dieting produces changes in your body that encourage weight gain, you lose energy, it just isn’t fun and so on. Pick any diet you want. Are you prepared to spend the rest of your life eating that way? Probably not. The only real solution to a lifetime problem is a change in lifestyle and behavior.


DIETS ARE COMMONLY MISUNDERSTOOD AND MISHANDLED


Here’s a classic example: The Atkins diet! Ask almost anybody you know what the Atkins diet is, and they will say it’s a diet that lets you eat lots of things like steak, bacon…you know, the fun stuff, without worrying about those nasty old veggies and carbohydrates. That’s why it’s called “low carbohydrate”, right? Shows how far most people read. A few pages into the Atkins diet plan, you learn that eating like that is only supposed to be done for about the first two weeks, to shift your body into the proper mode for the next three phases. In each of those phases, Dr. Atkins actually instructed people to begin adding certain foods, including carbohydrates, back in because it is not healthy to remain on a straight diet of chicken-fried steak or whatever for the rest of your life.


Just to drive the point home, I have a friend who went on the Atkins diet over two years ago. After a couple of years, he was still eating from the list of foods that were recommended for the first two weeks! He lost weight at first, he’s gaining it back now, and then some, and has no idea why the Atkins diet doesn’t work any more.


It’s interesting to note that the Atkins diet, and almost any other weight loss program, diet drink, diet pill, fitness coach, you name it, includes exercise as being important to their product being effective.


YOU HAVE GOT TO EXERCISE FOR WEIGHT LOSS


In fact, many people could lose most of the weight they need to lose just by getting into the right exercise program and staying with it! That’s half the problem. Our bodies are designed by Mother Nature to DO THINGS! Clicking the remote doesn’t count. Again, this topic is broader than the scope of this article, but the facts are that if you want to improve your overall health, defeat or at least delay dozens of mental and physical conditions, get more enjoyment out of life, live longer, live better, AND lose weight, you need to exercise.


The basic rule of weight loss and weight gain is that if you eat more calories than you burn you gain weight. If you burn more calories than you burn, you lose weight. That simple.


For most people it really seems simple. If they eat less, they will lose weight!


IN PLACE OF A DIET YOU NEED TO SUBSTITUTE GOOD NUTRITION


As pointed out above, simply cutting foods out of your diet is not the answer. However, the solution is simple – just eat sensibly. Nobody ever said you can’t eat chocolate cake, just that you shouldn’t eat two or three pieces a day, and the piece you DO eat should be a normal size. We all have at least a vague idea of what foods we SHOULD be eating, and we have a good idea of what we shouldn’t be eating, or at least eating a lot of. This is an active process. Most people drive up to the window and say, “Give me your 99 cent greaseburger and a cup of water with sugar.” When asked if they want to “supersize” it, they agree. Even the good restaurants serve a lot more food than it is healthy to eat, but most people go ahead and eat it anyway because they have no idea of how much they should be eating, because it tastes so good, or because they were taught to clean their plates.


DON’T WORRY ABOUT THE FRILLS


You see a lot of diet and weight loss products that claim that they have found THE SOLUTION to your weight loss problem. Hardly anybody gets overfat (Arnold Schwarzenegger is “overweight”) because of one single thing. Mostly, it will occur over a period of time because of a combination of factors. While nutrition and exercise are two of the absolute MOST important factors, simply changing one without the other doesn’t work as well as putting both into action. Little things like an electric exercise belt, a pill made out of grapefruit, or a secret drink from Tahiti might help your weight loss program, but if you aren’t already doing the two most important things, don’t expect to see much in the way of results. That’s why so many of these diet and weight loss products have a remark on the label that says something like “…when used in conjunction with a proper diet and regular exercise.”


There is good scientific evidence that things like cortisol and caffeine can influence weight gain and weight loss, for example, but if you were to try to control your weight over a lifetime by controlling these factors, you probably would not notice any real results. If, however, you were to begin eating sensibly and getting more exercise, taking cortisol blockers or cutting caffeine out of your diet MIGHT contribute a few extra pounds of weight loss, but it is weight you will probably lose eventually if you stay on your weight loss program.


YOUR WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAM, THAT’S THE GOAL


You are not your brother, your sister, or your mother no matter how closely you are tied to them genetically. What works for one of them might not be what you need. While there is scientific fact to back up the exercise equations outlined above each person is going to react in their own unique way. You need to exercise, but maybe not as much as your friend. You need to eat less chocolate ice cream, but maybe you can’t eat as much as your friend does. You need to make any weight loss program work for you by designing it around you. Do the exercises you like to do, just make sure you are doing enough. What’s enough? Well, you will have to experiment and see. Eat the foods you like, just eat them in sensible quantities and eat primarily foods that have a lot of real nutrition in them. What foods? Again, you will have to find your way, probably by trial and error, although there are many excellent books to give you guidance.


Speaking of goals, your goal is to be healthy and happy. Wanting to weigh a given weight because somebody else weighs that amount is senseless. You shouldn’t even be trying to weigh what you weighed in high school, because, physically speaking, that was a different person. He or she was someone with a different metabolism, lifestyle, and tastes. Concentrate on getting your exercise and eating properly and let your body figure out how much it needs to weigh.


Trying to tailor a weight loss program on someone else’s results is just asking for trouble as far as weight loss is concerned. They may be able to run faster than you. They may have a higher metabolic rate than you. They may have a different bone structure. They may have fewer obstacles than you. Let’s face it, somebody like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie can have the best equipment, the finest personal trainer, and can make the opportunity to sculpt a beautiful body. Plus they have the incentive of knowing that their multimillion dollar salaries depend on their maintaining the basic equipment their genetic makeup endowed them with. You and I have an old set of barbells, a cracked sidewalk, sneakers that are falling apart, live paycheck to paycheck, and the kids are going to be home in two hours. How to make Direct Response work one step at a time

One efficient method is to use of the multi-step process in
direct response marketing. For example, single-step
marketing could be defined as sending out a flyer in the
neighborhood, telling people about a neighbor’s home that
has just been sold by you or as running a one-time ad in a
local paper advertising an investment offering you have or
as running an ad in the paper that says “Call me before you
redecorate, ” and so forth. In other words, anything where
you do a single step in the hope that you will get
responses.

Now, true – you may run the same ad more than one time in
your paper over a period of a few months, and you may send
out farming flyers or postcards to people over a period of
time. But that is not what I’m talking about here, because
each of those particular efforts is really a single-step
process. You send out the piece, and prospects are supposed
to call.

Now, while this seems easy and logical, it also has been
proven over time to just not work. The real secret to
direct response marketing is to use little, bite-size
chunks for people so that they are responding to what is
easy and non-threatening, allowing them to take little
steps, one at a time.

For example, let’s say you run an ad that says, “Do You
Worry That Your Filthy Air Ducts Could Be Making Your
Family Sick?” “If so, call. 1-800-000-0000, 24 hours, for a
FREE recorded message to get a copy of an amazing report.
It reveals the secrets of 99.9% pure indoor air your
allergist will never tell you! Call NOW to get this eye
opening FREE report!”

When you run that ad in the paper, what is the purpose of
that ad? Is the purpose of that ad to sell a product? Is
the purpose of that ad to secure an appointment for a
presentation? No – the purpose of that ad is one thing only
– to get people to call your 800# and listen to the
recorded message!

In fact, we should take it back a step farther. The purpose
of the headline on the ad is to get somebody’s attention
and cause them to stop going through their publication.

The purpose of the headline is not to sell or solve
anything. The headline, then, has a single purpose. The
headline’s function is to get people to read the copy of
your ad. The copy is, then, the next step, keeping people
interested enough to follow through and call the 800#.

Now when prospects call the 800# and listen to the message,
what’s the purpose there? Is the purpose of the message to
make a sale or get a client? No – again, the purpose of the
message is only to get people to leave their names and
addresses.

Once prospects leave their names and addresses, and you get
their phone number through the Caller ID, what is the
purpose of the follow-up that you would do on the phone and
the report? Is it to sell? Is it to get prospects to hire
you? No – the purpose of the report going out is to get
people familiar with you and your company, and to get them
familiar with what you have to offer, and to answer the
questions they have.

Once they’ve gotten the report, you move into the
multi-step sequence and follow-up. See, the real secret of
direct response marketing is, after you’ve gotten
somebody’s interest, you must try not to make them do any
more than they are comfortable with doing at any particular
step. To make all the steps combined work up to the sale of
products and services.

But each individual step is small, and simple, and doesn’t
ask people to do more than ease them into the next step.
The purpose of each individual step is to do only what it
is supposed to do. The purpose of the recorded message is
not to make a sale; again, it is to get a prospect to leave
his or her name and address.

The only purpose of the recorded message is to get
prospects to leave a name and address. You’re not trying to
sell them or convince them of anything. I see people
running seminars, for example, and their recorded message
talks about how great they are and how big they are and
how smart they are, etc….all these things that are of no
interest to the prospects whatsoever.

They are asking the prospects to do way too much. In fact,
for seminars, I recommend only doing an ad that offers a
FREE report. The FREE report then offers the seminar to
make the steps more non-threatening and easier for people
to digest.

You see, the bottom line is that people are afraid and
confused. The old single-step marketing the old “shove it
in their face” approach, does not work. For the present
and the future, to get people interested and wanting to do
business with you, you have to take it slow and easy! You
can not expect your marketing to do things that it is not
capable of doing.

If you think you need single-step marketing to create sales
instantly, just forget it. Please don’t forget this lesson
about the multi-step approach, and please don’t forget this
concept of asking each step to do only what it is supposed
to do.

You should not try to incorporate multiple steps into a
single step. You don’t want to mix up your product
presentation stuff into your copy in the ads. If you follow
this process you will see your leads go up and you will see
your business go up. But even more important, if you follow
this process, the pressure will be off. There will be no
more feeling like you have to close, or that you have to
make a certain step do multiple things. It doesn’t work
anyway, so why put yourself under all that pressure?

This is an 11 step guide to setting up a freshwater aquarium in your home.


Equipment you will need:


Aquarium

Aquarium gravel

Aquarium filter

Replacement filter media

Heater

Other decorations (such as plants)

Chemical test kits

Fish food

Aquarium vacuum

Fish net

Glass Scrubber

5-gallon bucket

Pasta strainer


Realize the responsibility involved.

A tropical fish tank is just like having a dog or a cat when it comes to the amount of effort on your part. In order to have a successful fish tank you will have to work at it. Once a week, or at most once every two weeks, you will need to perform some kind of maintenance on the tank. Most of the time you will be performing water changes. You will also have to feed your tropical fish at least once a day. If you are up to the challenge, please proceed!


Decide on an aquarium size.

It’s a good idea to have in mind what kind of tropical fish you want to keep before you purchase an aquarium. Some tropical fish only grow to be an inch or two, whereas other types of tropical fish can grow 12 or 13 inches in length! Knowing what kind of tropical fish you want will help you decide the size of the tank they will need. If this is your first time with an aquarium, I would recommend going with a 10 or 20 gallon aquarium for now.


Decide on the aquarium’s location.

Place your aquarium in an area where the light and temperature of the tank won’t be affected by external sources such as windows and heater vents. You will want to place your aquarium on a stand that will be able to hold its total weight. A good rule of thumb for determining the total weight of a full aquarium is 10 pounds per gallon of water. For example, a 55-gallon tank will weigh approximately 550 pounds when filled with water!


Buy your aquarium and equipment.

Now is the time to decide on the type of filtration you will want to use. You will also need to purchase a heater capable of heating the tank size you have. Buy the gravel, plants, a power strip and other decorations. A good rule of thumb for the amount of gravel that you will need is 1 to 1.5 pounds of gravel per gallon of water.


Set up your aquarium and stand.

Wash out your tank with water only! Do not use soap or detergents. Soap residue left behind will be harmful for your tropical fish. If you are going to use an under gravel filter (not recommended) now would be the time to set it up as well.


Wash Gravel, plants and decorations.

Be sure to wash the gravel thoroughly before adding it to your tank. An easy way to do this is to put some of the rocks in a pasta strainer and wash them out in your bathtub. Then place the clean gravel in a clean 5-gallon bucket for transport to the aquarium. After adding the gravel you can place your plants and decorations.


Add water to the aquarium.

To avoid messing up your gravel and plants, you can place a plate or saucer in the middle of your aquarium and direct the water flow onto the plate. Use room temperature water when filling. To remove the chlorine and chloramine, use something like Tetra AquaSafe for Aquariums. Don’t completely fill up the aquarium until you are sure of the layout of your decorations. Otherwise, when you place your arm in to move stuff around water is going to spill over. Doh!


Set up equipment.

Install your heater but don’t plug it in until the thermostat in the heater has adjusted to the water temperature. This usually takes about 15 minutes or so. Hook up your filter and any other equipment you have, then top off the aquarium water to just under the hood lip. Place your hood and light on the aquarium and then check your power cords to be sure that they are free of water. I would also recommend using a drip loop on all of the power cords to be extra cautious. Plug all of the equipment into a power strip and then “turn on” the aquarium.


Wait, wait, wait and then wait some more.

I know, you want to add some tropical fish. But, in order to do this right you must wait until your aquarium has cycled before adding any fish. There are ways of speeding up this process. Check out the nitrogen cycle page to learn more. If you must use fish to cycle, try to get a hardier species like the zebra danio or cherry barb.


Add tropical fish.

Only add one or two fish at a time. Adding a couple tropical fish at a time gives your filtration system the time needed to take on the increased biological load that the new fish introduce. When you bring the fish home let the bag float in the tank for about 15 minutes so that the fish can become acclimated to the temperature and pH of the aquarium water. After 5 minutes of floating the bag you should add some of the aquarium water to the bag so that the fish can become acclimated to the pH level in the aquarium. This will help reduce the amount of stress imposed on the tropical fish. Stressed tropical fish often leads to dead tropical fish! Don’t feed your tropical fish on the first day. They probably wouldn’t eat any food on the first day anyway. Let them get acquainted with their new home.


Get ready for regular maintenance.

Be prepared to spend some time once every week or two to clean your tank. Performing regular water changes will reduce the nitrate levels and keep your tropical fish happy and healthy.

The most effective form of advertising is also the oldest:
word-of-mouth. Bright ads and slick brochures don’t compare
to an informed recommendation (or warning!) from someone
trusted and respected by potential customers.

Word-of-mouth can be just as effective when the information
comes directly from you. By networking with colleagues,
allied businesses, and potential customers, people can
learn more about who you are and what you do. Networking is
also a great way to become more attuned to the issues that
affect your customers-their needs, concerns, and
preferences-giving you a better chance of being in that
proverbial “right place” at the right time.

Networking is no different than attending a social
gathering. In fact, it’s better because you already have
something in common with nearly everyone you meet. Of
course, you should never adopt a “who are you and what can
you do for me” attitude. Networking works best when
there’s no pressure to make a sale. Ask questions and
always listen. First impressions are important, but they
also can be enhanced or changed over time.

To begin building your business network, consider the
following:

Professional societies. Nearly every type of business has a
national association that represents their members’
interests; most have local chapters with regular meetings
and activities. Along with providing a great source of
contacts, professional societies offer volunteer
opportunities where you can demonstrate your initiative,
cooperative spirit, and leadership qualities.

Customers’ professional societies. If you really want to
know what your customers are thinking, get involved in
organizations that represent their interests. Do some
research before you sign up, however. Some groups may have
restrictions on membership, while others may have fees
that exceed your expected returns. On the other hand, many
groups may encourage businesses such as yours to advertise
in their publications or participate in special programs.

Chambers of Commerce/Business Roundtables. These groups
offer valuable exposure within a particular community or
region. While other members may not be in your target
market, they can provide valuable leads and referrals
(there’s that word-of-mouth advertising again!). Many also
provide opportunities for small businesses to “show their
stuff” via trade fairs, demonstrations, and media features.

Community service organizations. This is a great way to
combine a personal interest with your business. Many
groups may have a need for your type of service, giving the
opportunity to do pro bono work in return for free
visibility. What’s more, your fellow volunteers may also
be potential customers.

Everywhere you look you see affiliate program offers for
every product or service that you can think of. Some have
fully automated systems that sell high volumes of hard
products all over the world. In case you don’t know, “hard”
products are those that you can touch…unlike an ebook or
downloadable web template. Many affiliate programs have
several thousand affiliates and one or two of the bigger
companies have over one million affiliates.

What are the advantages of joining an affiliate program?

They provide a ready-made business. This is a very big plus
for those people who want to earn some kind of living off
the Internet but lack the knowledge or inclination to set up
a business by themselves.

Commissions and rewards are generally good, and the more
established programs offer a real chance of advancement to
higher and better-paid levels.

Other affiliates are usually on hand to offer practical
support.

What are the limitations?

You are restricted in your promotional activities due to the
fact that you do not actually own the affiliate site they
give you. You won’t be able to put such things as banners,
images, links, meta tags, etc. onto your page.
The URL of your affiliate page is often either too long or
contains such awkward things as question marks, which many
Search Engines will not index.

Any promotional ads or articles have probably already been
used by thousands of other people and consequently may have
lost its impact, making it more difficult to achieve sales
or referrals.

If the program you have joined has not yet established
itself (or in some cases even if it has), then you may
encounter problems with payments owed to you not being
honored. You also run the risk of low quality products or
sub-standard statistics that do not accurately record how
many referrals or sales you have made.

You may be required to purchase a minimum quantity of the
product on a regular basis before you start to qualify for
commissions or even before you can become an affiliate.
You may not get the technical or affiliate support you might
expect from the company. This may be due to inadequate
staffing, or the company’s negligence.

Other people in your downline do nothing to promote the
program.

At least four of the above limitations can be overcome with
a little time and effort. You could, for example, come up
with fresher ads to promote the program (provided this is
allowed).

If the company supplies the email addresses of people in
your downline, then you could offer to help the less active
members. Very often these people are passive not because
they are lazy or apathetic but merely because they don’t
know HOW to promote effectively! your guidance could mean
the difference between no sales or referrals and healthy
downlines and residual incomes.

As regards promoting your actual page, here are a couple of
little tricks that should overcome a number of
restrictions:

the “Save As” function. Upload the page to your web site.

Making this “mirror page” of your affiliate page will
dramatically improve your advertising options.

Making a myspace profile for your band, company or organisation will gain you useful and effective free advertisement. The aim is to build up direct contact with your target group. A community where your fans or costumers will hang out, ask you questions, talk to you and be easy to reach.

To start off, you need to create a profile on myspace. Make sure that you register with the display name of your authority and leave the First Name and Last Name fields alone. Registering with an email that you don’t own will save your email accounts from a lot of irritating emails that myspace sends out every hour each day.

When you have registered, it’s time to chose an url address for your account. The url will be www.myspace.com/(your url name). After making the url name, you may pimp up your profile. Start with getting a good layout that you can use for backgrounds. You can find such on the myspace backgrounds site. You also need to add a description that should at least cover one page. Add images, music, glitter, videos to it, so it gets interesting to read. Since it’s on myspace, you should better write simple, so the average myspace user can understand. Write about what the organisation do, links to cool stuff and such. When you are happy with it, it’s time to move to the next step.

Make sure you don’t add too much friends per day or your account will be banned. The limit of today is currently 500 friends a day but it may as well change in the future. So be on your watch.

Adding friends is great, now you will slowly get a reachable community. From it, you can promote your organisation/band or company buy sending out bulletins. Just make sure you don’t send too much, because then you will get a bad reputation. One bulletin each day is enough for most of us. Make every bulletin unique and as interesting as possible.

Other then sending out bulletins, you can also respond to your visitors comments, sending out happy birthday comments and starting myspace groups. The possibilities are endless.

People in network marketing and internet marketing are always looking for the tip-over point.


The tip-over point is hard to pinpoint, but its effect can be awesome and hard to miss.


Let’s say you have signed up with a new internet business opportunity. You have your website, and you have done all the promotional stuff…search engine optimization, built an opt-in mailing list, post on forums, write articles…the whole nine yards. Then you wait. Maybe an order or two trickles in, but after a while, that dries up, if it ever happens at all.


So, you try a couple of new tactics, redesign the page, join a couple more forums, try some free classified advertising and sit back again. Same thing.


Now, at this point, 99.99999% of new internet marketers or network marketers are going to throw in the towel and start telling anybody they meet that internet marketing and/or network marketing is a scam…a rip-off!


Here’s a fact for you. It is going to take time to make your home or internet business successful. Even if you are doing all the right things, success will probably not come to you overnight. Even if you DO the right things, you are more likely to be successful if you KEEP doing them!


It’s sort of like pushing a rock up a hill. You pushed it, you moved it, and the place you are trying to get to with the rock is closer, but you aren’t there yet. As you continue to push, you may hit rough spots or slick spots, and even slide back down the hill from time to time, but if you keep on pushing, you will eventually reach a spot where things change.


With pushing a rock up a hill, it’s the crest of the hill. You just keep doing what you’ve been doing, and the rock will reach the crest of the hill. Depending on the slope of the downhill side, and the speed with which you were pushing when you hit the top, and the snags that might get in the way, you will find pushing the rock just got easier, and you might not even be able to catch up with it at all.


There’s a spot in internet and network marketing that is similar. You’ve been placing the advertisements, writing the articles, visiting the forums with little or no signs of success. Then, one day, you find that you’ve made a sale. The next one might be a day or a week away, but you keep doing what you’ve been doing and they get closer together…maybe even several in the same day.


You have finally reached the tip-over point. That’s the point in which all that you have done has pushed your home or internet business onto a plane where it almost seems like it has a life of its own. However, if you quit doing what you’ve been doing, things might slow down or come back to a stop.


People in multi-level marketing (MLM) sometimes get to really see the tip-over in a way that non-MLM people seldom do. I’ve had friends in multi-level marketing who spent all their time trying to sell product and just recruited the occasional new down line member. As commonly happens, most of these people fall by the wayside and never really produce anything. However, if enough people have been added to the down line, it is likely that some quality producers will emerge. When enough of these people have been added and they have gotten their collective feet on the ground, they can make a network marketing, or internet marketing, business grow by leaps and bounds.


I often mention my two friends who became millionaires in two different network marketing programs. Neither made tons of money from their own sales. Both took between three and four years to hit their tip-over point. When it arrived however; when they had enough people in their down lines that were producing income and building THEIR down lines, that’s when my friends saw their checks skyrocket. One month, one was showing me a check for over $25,000.00. Two months later, he got one for over $50,000.00. A few months after that, he was making over $100,000.00 a month!
