Waking Up

Picture this. You’re sitting in the audience at a hypnosis show. A hypnotized subject on stage has been told by the hypnotist that he hates the show, that he’s not hypnotized, and that there’s an invisible wall in front of him, preventing him from leaving the stage. On cue, the subject jumps up, yells at the hypnotist, and begins to storm off. But he hits the wall and recoils back, furious about this impediment. The hypnotist tells him that he’s free to go, but he can’t. The hypnotist asks him if he’s hypnotized, and he says, “Of course not!” “Then go,” says the hypnotist. Still, he can’t. “What’s stopping you?” asks the hypnotist. “There’s a wall,” cries the volunteer. “There’s no wall,” says the hypnotist. His words fall on deaf ears. The illusion is simply more powerful than reality. Yet, the subject insists that he’s fully awake.

Another subject is given an onion and told that it’s the most delicious fruit he’s ever tasted. He munches it happily, commenting on its delectable sweetness.

How do these stories relate to our reality? What if we’re all hypnotized, stuck behind invisible walls that exist only in our minds? Suppose our preferences were actually colored by hypnotic programming and that what we felt we deserved was similarly the result of hypnosis. How would we know it? Could it be that our conviction that we’re fully awake is a misunderstanding of the facts? If so, how can we see through the illusion to embrace the limitless potential that awaits us? How can we discover and achieve what we really want, separate from the set of desires hypnotically imposed upon us, and predictably become fully engaged in life? How can we wake up?

What does it mean to be hypnotized?

The simple explanation that we hypnotists use says that the mind is divided into both a conscious and a subconscious part. The conscious mind is that part of our thinking that we’re aware of, and the subconscious mind is that part of our thinking that is below our awareness. The theory suggests that it’s the latter, the subconscious, which is more important in determining our behavior; that is, we end up making important decisions about what to do and how to interact with the world around us largely for reasons we never get to understand or to consider on a conscious level. The pathway through which those thoughts came to live in our subconscious mind is the result of hypnosis.

If you don’t think highly of yourself, or if you’re afraid of clowns, or if you’re a chain smoker, someone can tell you to think more highly of yourself, or that clowns aren’t scary, or that smoking is bad for you. Chances are, people have tried to tell you how to think or behave before, and it hasn’t worked. Why not? Because they were communicating with your conscious mind. To make an impact, a message has to reach deeper into the subconscious mind, and this requires techniques for bypassing the conscious mind. Think of your conscious mind as a sentinel, standing guard over your subconscious mind. It only allows thoughts to enter which are consistent with what you already believe. In order to slip in a new belief, you have to lull the guard to sleep. That’s what I do.

That’s also what’s been done to you by your parents, teachers, mentors, and society in general. When your guard was off duty, when you were too young or impressionable to fight it, messages were delivered to your subconscious mind, bypassing your critical faculty, the part of your conscious mind that deflects unwanted information. So, without your awareness or permission, you were hypnotized, and your subconscious mind is now full of stuff you didn’t put there and may not want. What are the messages we’ve been hypnotized to believe? Everything from who we are in relation to our world, to what we want, to what we deserve, to what we’re capable of accomplishing. Sometimes, these things come into conflict with one another and suffering ensues. For example, you might have come to feel that you want great wealth, but also that you don’t deserve it or that you’re incapable of achieving it. Such a combination would result in significant psychological pain, and as long as your hypnotic programming remained intact, you’d be powerless over that pain.

Why don’t we feel hypnotized?

Does a fish see the water in which it swims? Of course not. The medium in which we live and have lived since we developed conscious perception is invisible to us. We think hypnosis should look a certain way, so we disregard all the evidence that indicates that we’re hypnotized. But being hypnotized doesn’t feel like anything. It’s just a condition of being conditioned. That’s it.

One of my favorite stories is about the child who slips into his grandfather’s bedroom and paints Limburger cheese, an extremely smelly cheese, onto his grandfather’s mustache while he sleeps. On awakening, the grandfather sniffs, considers a moment, and says, “This room smells like Limburger cheese!” He leaves the room and goes through the house, declaring that each room smells like Limburger cheese. Finally, he steps out onto the porch, sniffs, and cries, “Oh, my God, the whole world smells like Limburger cheese!”

I remember reading somewhere that we see the world, not as it is, but as we are. Like the grandfather in my story, what’s actually coming from us appears to be coming from everything around us. Our trance is so strong and compelling that we have no hope of seeing through it to the truth. This may seem like bad news, but knowing that we’re in a trance can liberate us. If we’re entrapped by our unconscious adherence to an illusion, it is our conscious recognition of that fact that will ultimately set us free. Gurdjieff, the esteemed philosopher, said, “The first step to escaping from prison is realizing you’re in prison.”

What is life like after hypnosis?

A life without hypnosis is a life of freedom. Buddhist notions of liberation and enlightenment derive from the concept that we’re living in illusion, and that, freed of that illusion, we experience joy, contentment, enthusiasm, love, compassion, and a whole host of other qualities that we’ve mistakenly sought elsewhere. It is possible to achieve liberation from our illusion, to wake up from our trance, to become unhypnotized.

With this possibility looming in front of us, the wise person has no choice but to dedicate him or herself to the pursuit of an awakened state. I counsel my clients to learn such tools as meditation and mindfulness in order to take advantage of the benefits they offer. Much is available now to help us go beyond the excuses we’ve used for not starting that journey, such as books, tapes, and classes.

None of the reasons you’ve probably used for failing to take these steps is viable, and no matter how big an obstacle you think separates you from practicing these skills, it’s simply not worth sacrificing your own vitality. By learning the tools of transformation, we can begin to wake up, start over, and create the life we’re meant to live.

How to Reach the Top of the Ladder of Success

How To Reach The Top Of The Ladder Of
Success

———————————————

First you must get onto the ladder of Success!

I can think of three ways:

1. Become a top sales-person

2. Become a popular writer

3. Pass exams.

I can only help you with the last two methods.

1. The leader of your country… President or
prime minister or dictator (?) reached the top of
the ladder of success by being a good
salesperson. Perhaps she sold herself to
voters. Maybe he sold himself to fighting forces
who put him in power.

2. If you’re at least 16 years old – Have you
learned to write gripping essays? Make money
from writing.

You don’t need salesmanship to make money –
more than enough to pay for sales advisors
with your essays.

Why do I say 16 years old? Because Nori’s
success was bringing her good money at that
age from her website. Read about it here
http://case-
studies.sitesell.com/buildwebprofit.html#NORI

Nori just wrote essays about her holidays, and
took photographs. Google is perfect for this
idea. You simply write about 30 interesting
essays (pages) before submitting them to
Google Adsense. Continued success means
keep writing new essays.

———-

Popularity

———-

Is your subject popular enough for hundreds of
visitors/day? Look on Overture.com to find out
what is the top price for each keyword in your
subject. Look for a subject with lots of
keywords for which advertisers pay $5 or more
per click. Each time your Adsense page gets a
click, some of that $5 goes to Google and some
goes to you.

So you don’t need any salesmanship at all to
make money from Google. If you have 500
keywords and write two essays per week you’ll
finish in…

If you follow your initial success you’ll think of
other approaches over the years. But
meanwhile, you’ll make money with your
essays.

You don’t even need to know anything about
putting up websites for success.
http://find.sitesell.com/buildwebprofit.html will
do all the technical stuff for you, while you
concentrate on writing. They also show you
other ways to make money once you’re earning
well from Adsense.

3. Does this mean that you don’t need exams?

No.

a. Passing exams proves you can learn. Study
broadens your mind. Writers and salespeople
must see other points of view than their own.

b. Even if you fail your exams, your mind has
already been broadened. But why not get the
credit for your work if you can?

c. Credit – you may be surprised at the respect
you get with a string of letters after your name.
You get more respect still from being able to
write essays well, but if you have both things
going for you…

d. Planning success in employment? You must
pass exams.

——————-

Employers And Exams

——————-

Why do employers insist on success in exams?
They prove you can learn things.

Why do employers require experience? They
don’t respect what you learned to pass your
exams. You learn on the job after passing your
exams.

——————–

Knowledge Not Needed

——————–

That means that you don’t need the knowledge.
You need the exam passes. My book about
“Exam Mastery” will get you unearned exam
success. I’ve passed several exams without
knowing much about the subject.

———————————————–

Once you’re on the employment ladder of
success

———————————————–

Be as cynical about climbing the ladder as I
taught you to be in my exam book. Your target
was to pass exams, not to gain knowledge.
Now your target is to climb the ladder of
success, not to give your best work.

1. Read John Molloy’s “Dress for Success”. Apply
it. Life’s just as unfair as exams. Your dress
shouldn’t matter for success, but it does.

2. Study your bosses. Who decides promotions?
Interests? Attitudes?

3. Attend all meetings. This takes you from your
work, but your target is success. Make your
voice heard, using what you learned from my
free report about essays. This will

a. give you practice in public speaking and

b. the bosses will notice you. Tailor what you
say to your research in step 2.

c. If you get the chance to run a brain-storming
session, organise the information on the board
as you learned from my book about exams. That
impresses bosses.

4. Attend all seminars and study the format.
Now use your practice in public speaking to run
a seminar. This will really make the bosses sit
up and take notice. Make sure to consider step
2 when you’re planning your seminar. Use all
the tricks in my essays report to make your
seminars a success.

When you succeed you will know that you
couldn’t have reached the top without getting
onto the ladder of success.

Marketing Optimization 101 for Blogs

free  Comments Off on Marketing Optimization 101 for Blogs
Jan 162023

Copyright 2005 Rok Hrastnik

Truth be told, most blogs aren’t really optimized for marketing effectiveness. Even more so, some blogs are absolute marketing machines, but they at the same time fail to fully capitalize on that fact by not being really optimized marketing-wise.

Blogs may be Web 2.0, but bloggers should not ignore some of the good old internet direct marketing tactics that have been working for marketers online almost for a decade or more.

Here are the absolute 101 basics you really shouldn’t ignore …

1. DON’T FORGET E-MAIL DELIVERY

Bloggers are often abandoning or completely ignoring e-mail as a tool to deliver their content to their readers. As an RSS evangelist I certainly believe in using RSS to get your content to the world, but only as a supplement to e-mail delivery.

While RSS provides us with many unique benefits, it is yet to reach mainstream adoption. Until it does, marketers and publishers should not even consider abandoning e-mail delivery, or risk ignoring most of their potential readership.

If you’re still wondering why you need e-mail, consider the potential you might be wasting without it. Someone visits your blog, likes the content and would like to be notified as new content of interest becomes available, and he does not know what RSS is or even care. If you fail to capture his e-mail address and consent at that exact moment, he might never again return to your site, either because he forgets about it or because dozens of other sites capture his interest even before the next day.

2. E-ZINE PUBLISHING IS STILL A MUST

Publishing a blog is not a replacement for an e-zine. If nothing else, publish a weekly or monthly e-zine of your top blog posts, available in a single easy-to-consume format.

Some simply do not have the time to watch your blog regularly and others will only want to receive a quick summary to get only your best and most crucial content. Publishing an e-mail e-zine will do that for you, giving you the opportunity to communicate with the widest possible long-term audience for your blog.

3. E-MAIL AND RSS SUBSCRIPTIONS

Providing e-mail (e-zine) and RSS subscriptions is important to the success of any blog. But neither of these will do you much good if your visitors don’t actually see them and if you don’t give them enough incentive to subscribe.

Foremost, display your e-mail e-zine and RSS subscriptions information at the top of your blog, instead of somewhere far down where no one will see them.

And second, use enticing copy to get visitors to subscribe. Briefly explain the benefits of subscribing, what kind of content they can expect to receive, and also do not forget about your privacy disclaimer, calming potential subscribers that you will never abuse their personal information.

4. EXPLAIN RSS

Most internet users still do not know what RSS is or how to use it, and consequently the RSS buttons on your blog mean absolutely nothing to them.

To overcome this problem, create a special RSS presentation page and link to it next to the RSS subscribe button. On that page explain:

– What RSS is
– How the visitor will benefit from using RSS
– Where they can get a free RSS aggregator (recommend one yourself!)
– How they can install it (provide step-by-step instructions)
– How they can subscribe to your RSS feeds
– Why they should subscribe to your own RSS feeds

Then, on this same page, include the links to all of your RSS feeds.

5. TOP CONTENT

If you update your blog frequently, your less recent top content keeps being pushed down and down, where most of your blog readers will never bother to look for it.

Overcome this frequent blog problem by creating a list of your top posts, clearly displayed and available from each of your pages. Depending on the topic you cover, you might want to place these headlines as close to the top of your blog as possible, in order to quickly entice your new visitors to start reading the best of what you have to offer and then use this content to convert them to loyal readers and subscribers.

6. THE HEADLINE

The site or blog headline will tell your visitors what to expect from reading your blog and will answer their key question: “What’s in it for me?”

Make sure that your blog headlines gives this reason and the story inviting enough for your readers to keep reading.

7. LEAD YOUR VISITORS TO YOUR MDA

MDA is the Most Desired Action you want your visitors to take on your site, ranging from a subscription to your e-zine to requesting more information about your services or ordering your product / getting more information about it.

Your blog will be of great help in this area, but only if you actually lead your visitors to this action. Putting this information in your menu simply is not enough.

Experiment putting some copy for your MDA directly below each blog post (on your permanent blog post archives pages) and also prominently in your left- or right-hand columns.

If you’re providing multiple services or products, promote each of them next to the appropriate posts, based on post topics.

And yes, this is more important than having dozens of Google AdSense ads on your blog … if you want to use your blog as part of your marketing mix.

8. LOOK DIFFERENT

Blogs are usually not heavily designed and most of them look exactly the same. While light design is one of the positive sides of blogs, you should invest some effort in making your blog stand-out visually. Don’t cram it with design, but still make sure it’s different than every other blog in the market.

9. USE YOUR OWN DOMAIN

Having a subdomain.typepad.com type sub-domain might be the easiest choice, but don’t forget that your domain name is your permanent online address and part of your online brand.

Consequently, invest a couple of dollars to get your own domain name, to enforce your brand, as well as making it easier for your readers to access your blog.

10. DON’T FORGET YOUR KEYWORDS

What keywords do you want your content and blog to be found under in the search engines?

Don’t forget to implement these keywords in the titles and body content of your blog posts. I’m not saying you should write your posts to please the search engines, but at least keep them in mind and use them when possible, without taking anything away from the actual content.

11. INTERACT WITH YOUR READERS

If you’re blogging for business, don’t forget about business oriented reader interaction.

Mainly, solicit questions from your readers, pertaining to your field of expertise, and then respond to them via your blog. Post interesting client case studies. When you get a review, post it or link to it. And so on …

12. BLOG SPECIFIC PROMOTIONAL TACTICS 101

a] Intensively market your RSS feeds

b] Ping the search engines and directories after you update your blog, using a free service such as http://www.pingomatic.com

13. DON’T FORGET ABOUT THE CONTENT

And of course, none of the above won’t make any difference at all if you don’t provide high-quality, interesting and frequent content.

These 13 points are of course only the most basic stuff, but enough to help you get on the marketing optimization train.

How to Find What You Want with Google

free  Comments Off on How to Find What You Want with Google
Jan 152023

Most people who search on the internet have a favorite search engine. In fact, the majority of internet users choose Google.

Do you fall into this category? If so, are you taking advantage of everything Google offers?

If an internet search means you go to www.google.com and simply type 2 or 3 words into the search box, hoping to find what you’re looking for, you aren’t even scratching the surface.

How Can You Get Better Results?

Google is the number one search engine for good reason – their results are generally the most accurate. Even so, there are ways to pinpoint what you’re looking for even more effectively.

You have two options when it comes to fine-tuning your searches – you can use the Google Advanced Search screen or you can use “modifiers” in the main Google search.

Option 1: Google Advanced Search

When you go to www.google.com, there is a little “Advanced Search” link to the right of the main search box. If you click on that, you’ll get the much more detailed Google search, where you can make very specific requests.

The first four sections, highlighted in blue, are some of the most important. Here you can specify any of the following:

All of the words – this will give you results with all of your search words, but not in any particular order. They can also be anywhere on the page.
The exact phrase – this will give you results with exactly the phrase you enter. The phrase must appear on the page exactly the way you enter it.
At least one of the words – this will show results with any one or more of your search words on the page.
Without the words – this will give you results that don’t include your search terms at all.

These four sections can be used independently or combined to work together.

For example, you could search for the exact phrase ‘free virus software’ without the words ‘trial’ or ‘tryout’ if you’re looking for free virus software but don’t want trial versions that will expire after a short time.

As another example, you could use option #3 (at least one of the words) if you’re looking for something but don’t know exactly how to spell it. Put a few possible spellings in and it will find pages with any one or more of those spellings.

The rest of the sections on the Advanced Search page are pretty self-explanatory. One that I will point out is the Domain option. You can specify a website and either search for something only on that site, or anywhere but that site.

If you’ve found an interesting website that doesn’t have a search function of its own, you can use this to limit Google to searching that site for whatever you’re looking for. In fact, the Google search is often better even if the site does have its own search function.

You can also use it to find other references to something you might have read on a particular website. If you search for it and exclude the site you saw it on, you’ll find other references to it that you can cross-check.

Option 2: Using Modifiers

Modifiers will let you use all the advanced features without having to go to the Advanced Search page every time. These modifiers can just be entered in the standard Google search box to get the same results as the advanced options.

There are quite a few different modifiers that can be used, but some of the most useful are as follows:

Putting “” around a phrase will search for the exact phrase. Searching for free antivirus software will show you pages with those three words anywhere on the page. Searching for “free antivirus software” shows you pages that contain that exact phrase.

Putting a – before a word is the same as the advanced option “without the words.” So, to use the example used earlier, searching for “free virus software” -trial -tryout will show pages with that exact phrase, not including the other two words.

Using site: followed by the domain name of the website you want to search will only return results from that particular website. For example, searching for “virus protection” site:computer-help-squad.com will only return results from the www.computer-help-squad.com website.

Again, these can be combined so -site: will return results from any site except the one you specify.

How to Figure Out the Modifiers

The easiest way to see how to use modifiers in your searches is to try some searches with the Advanced Search page and see how Google formats them.

Using our example again, if you enter ‘free antivirus software’ in the “with the exact phrase” box and the words ‘trial’ and ‘tryout’ in the “without the words” box, the search that Google runs looks like this:

“free virus software” -trial -tryout

If you play around a bit with the advanced searches, you’ll see how Google formats them for you. Next time, you can just enter them yourself in the standard search box instead of going to the Advanced Search page.

Once you get the hang of these options in Google, you’ll find that your searches get even more accurate because you can filter out the stuff you don’t want.

Wacko Families Operator’s Manual
by Dan Reinhold

You hear about them, read about them…heck, our entire entertainment industry is almost exclusively based on them.

But can you admit that you belong to one??

It’s a never-ending waking nightmare. 24/7/365, you have FAMILY.

There is some escape possible. When you worked outside the h0me, you left to go to your job and were pretty much free while you were away, except for the occasional annoying call.

Then you went and blew it. You decided to w0rk at h0me.

The particulars don’t matter, not the what, for whom or even why. You’re at h0me.

Now consider the wiring of most people today in our society. “Work” and “home” have always been separate places and functions. When you’re “at work”, you’re working. When you’re “at home”, you’re not. Nice, easy, simple and understandable concept that kept everyone nodding and smiling like bobbleheads.

Think, then, of how haywire this rusty old wiring becomes when it tries to comprehend “w0rking at h0me”. Ouch.

You may know the what, for whom and why. I would certainly hope you do. Your family ( a loose configuration of various real and “honorary” relatives you either married or have known forever) only knows that you are “at home.” Does not compute, does not compute…

That’s the reason why they don’t get it.

You’re there at home, open, vulnerable, accessible, recruitable. To them, you can’t “work” while you’re “at home.” In their eyes, you’re JUST “at home” and so all the “at home” rules apply.

This is where “h0me business” and “h0me employment” rules are born and nourished and grown until all family (well, alright…most) can recognize and interpret them to the best of their old wiring’s ability.

You GOTTA:

Use workspeak. Set your “work hours” in your “work schedule” and “go to work” and “be working” when it’s time to do so.

Work when you’re working. No one makes a living playing Tetris or Doom, except the game testers. Unless your paychecks are from a game testing company, try sticking to business. That goes for IM and chatrooms and video cell phones and whatever the latest cool toys might be. Play later.

Show proof of working. I know this takes all the fun out of driving them crazy wondering what you’re doing, but it’ll really help. You don’t have to flash pay receipts or checks, but print out a confirmation, thank you note or hard copy of a piece of a project. Whatever you do, show. All the time. Remember you’re dealing with seriously rusty wiring. My brother-in-law still asks me, “So what’s that you do again???”

Apply glue liberally to your guns and stick to ’em. The bad news is you can never stop doing all these things. Just when you think they’ve finally got it, the eyes glass over and they start drooling again at the sound of your latest exploits. This stuff is imperative to garnering whatever support and cooperation you can get from these people who never go away. Either they will get it or they’ll decide to bother someone else.

Well, we can all dream, can’t we?

WEED CONTROL FACTS: WINNING THE BATTLE OF
THE WEEDS

Keeping your landscape plantings, flower beds, and nursery crops free of weeds is a battle, but if you approach it with a strategic plan, you will prevail. In order to develop a plan, you first must understand how weeds work, and what kind of weeds you are dealing with.

Basically weeds grow either from seed, or they
reproduce from their roots. As the roots grow outward from the parent plant, new plants sprout up from the lateral roots, creating more parent plants and the process continues and the weeds thrive. Weeds that tend to reproduce from the root are usually more difficult to control.

Weed control facts? Weeds are plants, and they
function just like the desirable plants in your yard. They need water, sunlight, and nutrition to survive. Of these three key survival needs, the easiest one for a gardener to eliminate is sunlight. Through proper mulching you can eliminate the sunlight.

But first, let’s look at the steps you should go through before you mulch, then we’ll discuss the best mulching techniques to use. In order for your weed control efforts to be truly effective, you should do everything in your
power to make your gardens as weed free as possible before you plant or mulch. There are a couple of ways you can go about this, either organically or with chemicals. I don’t like using chemicals, but I do use them for weed control, and I use them for pest control when necessary.

I’ll discuss organic control first. The first thing you should do is remove all unwanted vegetation from your planting area. Using a hoe, spade or other digging device, undercut the roots and remove the undesirable plants, roots and all. Then you should work the soil by
rototilling or turning the soil by hand.

Once worked, let the soil sit for four days or so, and work it again. Keep doing this over and over as long as time permits. This process serves two purposes. It brings the roots that were left in the soil close to the surface so they can be dried by the sun, which will make them non-viable, and it disturbs the weed seeds that have started to germinate, which makes them non-viable as well. The longer you continue this process the more weeds you are eliminating from your garden.

Weed control facts? Depending on the time of the year, there are a few billion weed seeds drifting through the air at any given time, so to think that you can eventually rid a garden of weed seed is false thinking, but at least
this process is effective for the remaining roots, which are the most difficult to control.

With that process complete, go ahead and plant your garden. When you’re done planting you can either mulch the bed, or keep turning the soil on a weekly basis to keep it free of weeds. Most people opt to mulch. Not only does mulch help to control the weeds, but if you select a natural mulch it also adds organic matter to
the soil which makes for better gardening results down the road.

Before mulching you can spread newspaper (7-9 layers thick) over the soil and place the mulch over top of that. The newspaper will block the sunlight from reaching the surface of the soil and help to keep weed growth to a minimum. The newspaper will eventually decompose, and not permanently alter the make up of your garden.
Paper grocery bags also work well, so the next time you hear, “Paper or Plastic?”, you’ll know how to answer.

What about black plastic, or the weed barrier fabric sold at garden centers? I don’t like either and I’ll tell you why. For one, neither one of them ever go away, and the make up of your garden is forever altered until you
physically remove them, which is a real pain in the butt.

Weed control facts? Plastic is no good for the soil because soil needs to breath. Plastic blocks the transfer of water and oxygen, and eventually your soil will suffer, as will your garden. It’s all right to use plastic in a
vegetable garden as long as you remove it at the end of the season and give the soil a chance to breath.

Weed barrier fabrics allow the soil to breath, but what happens is that when you mulch over top of the fabric, which you should because the fabric is ugly, the mulch decomposes and becomes topsoil. Weeds love topsoil, and they will grow like crazy in it. Only problem is, they are growing on top of the fabric, and you are stuck with a ton of problems, like a weedy garden, and a major job of trying to remove the fabric that is now firmly anchored in place because the weeds have rooted through it.

Weed fabric is also porous enough that if an area becomes exposed to the sunlight, enough light will peek through and weeds below the fabric will grow, pushing their way through the fabric. I don’t like the stuff. I’ve removed miles of it from landscapes for other people
because it did not work as they had expected.

Weed control facts? Controlling weeds with chemicals is fairly easy, and very effective if done properly. I know that many people don’t approve of chemical weed controls, but millions of people use them, so I might as well tell you how to get the most effect using them.

There are two types of chemical weed controls, post-emergent, and pre-emergent. In a nutshell, a post-emergent herbicide kills weeds that are actively growing. A pre-emergent prevents weed seeds from germinating. Of the post-emergent herbicides there are both selective and non-selective herbicides. A selective herbicide is like the herbicides that are in weed-and-
feed type lawn fertilizers. The herbicide will kill broad leaf weeds in your lawn, but it doesn’t harm the grass.

One of the most popular non-selective herbicides is Round-up, it pretty much kills any plant it touches. Rule number one. Read the labels and follow the safety precautions!!! Round-up is very effective if used properly, but first you must understand how it works.

Round-up must be sprayed on the foliage of
the plant, where it is absorbed, then
translocated to the root system where it then
kills the plant. It takes about 72 hours for the translocation process to completely take place, so you don’t want to disturb the plant at all for at least 72 hours after it has been sprayed.

After 72 hours you can dig, chop, rototill, and pretty much do as you please because the herbicide has been translocated throughout the plant. The manufacturer claims that Round-up does not have any residual effect, which means that you can safely plant in an area where Round-up has been used. However, I would not use it in a vegetable garden without researching further.

No residual effect also means that Round-up
has no effect whatsoever on weed seeds, so
there is absolutely no benefit to spraying the
soil. Only spray the foliage of the weeds you
want to kill. Be careful of over spray drifting to your desirable plants. To prevent spray drift I adjust the nozzle of my sprayer so that the spray droplets are larger and heavier, and less likely to be carried by the wind. I also keep the pressure in the tank lower by only pumping the tank a minimum number of strokes. Just enough to deliver the spray.

Buy a sprayer that you can use as a dedicated
sprayer for Round-up only. Never use a
sprayer that you have used for herbicides for
any other purpose. Once you have sprayed the
weeds, waited 72 hours and then removed
them, you can go ahead and plant. Mulching is
recommended as described above. To keep
weed seeds from germinating you can apply a
pre-emergent herbicide.

Depending on the brand, some of them are
applied over top of the mulch, and some are
applied to the soil before the mulch is applied. A pre-emergent herbicide creates a vapor barrier at the soil level that stops weed seed germination, and can be very effective at
keeping your gardens weed free. They usually
only last about 5 or 6 months and need to be
re-applied.

Visit a full service garden center and seek the
advice of a qualified professional to select the pre-emergent herbicide that will best meet your needs. Never use a pre-emergent herbicide in your vegetable garden, and be careful around
areas where you intend to sow grass seed. If
you spill a little in an area where you intend to plant grass, the grass will not grow. They really do work.

That’s what I know about weed control. Read this article several times. Your success depends on getting the sequence of events correct.

Succeed In Your Home Based Business The Jeff Bezos Way

free  Comments Off on Succeed In Your Home Based Business The Jeff Bezos Way

Starting out from his Garage
Jeff Bezos built the foundation of Amazon.com from the garage of his two-bedroom house rented outside of Seattle. He fashioned his first office tables from wooden doors, angle brackets, and two-by-four lumber purchased from Home Depot.

This article summarizes the recognizable aspects of Amazon.com’s success and lays down lessons learned in the form of tips. You have the opportunity to analyze the tips given here and apply them with prudence to your own business.

You as the owner of your own home based business started – or about to embark if you have not as yet started – with the same resources as Jeff Bezos. You are in a similar situation – if not much better position – than the Amazon founder because you have the secret to his success to learn and apply into your own business.

Tip No. 1: Be modest in your initial investment. For example, your laptop or PC shall not necessarily be top of the line. Your office location could be a corner of the house or your room, basement or garage. Save on office rent by all means. Be like Jeff Bezos and other successful marketers who spent prudently and succeeded.

Motivation
You should motivate yourself to succeed. When Amazon was struggling to make profits for the first time, only its founder Jeff Bezos believed that the business goal could be achieved in a year’s time. Everybody was astounded when Jeff Bezos achieved his goal after one year.

Tip No. 2: The lesson that could be learned from the above account is to lay down and make known in clear fashion your goal to every stake holder of your small business. They include your spouse and your web designer, among others.

Write down this goal and post this on the wall beside your desk. Save this goal in your hard disk and make the text the start up page when you boot your computer. You can convert your goal into a screensaver. Read your goal to yourself every day as you go about your business on the Internet.

Tip No. 3: You should motivate yourself every day and pass this motivation on to every one who’s involved in your business. To paraphrase the author Wallace D. Wattles who wrote The Science of Getting Rick in 1910, envision yourself right now as having a very successful business and do every which legal and ethical way to actualize your vision. FYI, Wattles’ book is featured in my web site.

Change
It is said that change is the one single permanent thing on this planet. Amazon changed the way it does business through the years. First it was an online book seller. Next it expanded into selling music and videos.

Then it offered toys, consumer electronics and software to its customers. These were linked with a host of new products until this very day. Amazon has a constantly evolving product line. Its competitors have a hard time catching up with the innovator.

During its initial years of operation, Amazon was not making any real profit. It practiced instead the habit of reinvesting its income into new markets. This it did to make possible for its customers to make wider choices for the company’s offerings.

Tip No. 4: Your home based business should be run like Amazon. You could be selling your single information product now. Two weeks from today you will have added another back end product. Next month you will have introduced into your product line the inventory of the affiliate program you have joined in.

Tip No. 5: If your web site is content based, you should be adding new content every day. Casual visitors to your web site will become your regular visitors when they see new content every time they come back to your site. And these visitors will in the end become your regular customers.

Be a Generalist
A generalist is one who does a multitude of things. In computer language it is known as multi-tasking. This has been the culture at Amazon.

Tip No. 6: You as the single person in your home business must be a generalist, too. This means doing and knowing everything that goes in and out of your business.

You don’t know any HTML coding? This is tolerable. You must strive however to understand at least the basic formatting that goes into you site code. This way you can make small insertions into your web pages when your web designer is nursing a cold or is out of town. Or you can learn a thing or two on scripting. By the way, HTML tutorial is one of several categories among the home based business free learning stuff presented in my web site.

Work Ethic
Jeff Bezos was the company CEO and he and his wife were the first workers at Amazon. Their work ethic was marked with hard work and consistency, among others. These traits were handed down to their employees through the years.

Tip No. 7: To succeed and last long in your Internet business, you should work hard to put your business online in the fastest and frugal manner possible. The important thing to consider is to start up and put your small business online early and rapidly. If you have to wake up at two in the morning to do your Internet work, by all means stick to this routine.

Tip No. 8: You should be consistent in your business-related tasks. If your content needs updating twice weekly, follow this schedule with devotion. Visitors to your web site will notice even slight changes to your content when they go back to visit your web pages. Not to mention the search engine spiders which would just be too glad (i.e., in electron manner of speaking) to index new contents to your web site.

Be First to Embrace Technology
Amazon was among the first, if not the first, to adopt online book retailing. When the major book sellers – Barnes & Noble and Borders Books among others – realized this new way of selling books, Amazon was miles ahead. Jeff Bezos surveyed the Internet horizon and embraced the best technology on sight.

Tip No. 9: New technologies come and go almost daily. Some of these technologies enable you to run your business fast and easy. Other technologies rob you of your investment. Your duty is to examine each technology and assimilate into your business the best.

The Internet’s New Secret Weapon for Getting Free Publicity

You probably don’t even know about them. Few people do.

Even fewer people realize how many different ways you can
use them to get free publicity, increase your search engine
rankings, and make yourself a media celebrity in your field.

I’m talking about “news alerts.”

Google offers Google News Alerts at www.news.google.com.
Look in the column to the left of the page.

Yahoo has a similar service, as do a number of other web
portals and news outlets.

News alerts are the Internet’s new — and one of its most
powerful — secrets weapons for attracting attention from
radio, TV and newspaper reporters.

You can sign up for news alerts for free. Then you choose
keywords related to your industry, and whenever those keywords
show up in a news story–practically anywhere–you get an
email notification and a link to the story..

News alerts allow you to identify and contact the journalist
who did the story to suggest a follow up, offer another
angle, etc. on the story they’ve already done.

You can even set up news alerts for a competitor’s name. If
they’re quoted in a story somewhere, you’ll be notified by
email. That gives you an opportunity to contact the reporter
who wrote the story and position yourself as a future
resource for similar pieces.

You can also set up your news alerts so that every time your
name appears in the media, it sends you an email
notification.

It¡¯s a great way to find out when your news releases, tip
sheets, or articles have been published. This can be
extremely valuable since people who print your
stuff don¡¯t always let you know they¡¯re doing it.

Furthermore, when you find out that something by you or
about you has been published, you can get copies or
reprints to use in a multitude of ways to further establish
your credentials with the media.

For instance, you can print out stories you may want to
include in your media kit, or even mail to journalists to
reassure them that your topic really IS newsworthy–
and that you indeed ARE an expert in your field.

I got quite a giggle — and a little bit of a shock — when
I set up a news alert for my own name recently.

I got an alert from Google a few days later telling me the
name “George McKenzie” had appeared in a Scottish TV
story.

When I clicked on the link, I found out it wasn’t really
about me–it was about a Scottish lawyer named Sir George
McKenzie, an advisor to King Charles the Second 300 years
ago.

I won’t give you the details here — a little too gruesome
for a family friendly article. But you can read it if you
choose by clicking on

News alerts are one of the Internet’s most important
developments for helping people get the attention of the
media.

They’re free, easy, versatile, valuable, and best of
all–your competitors probably don’t have a clue they exist.

reporters who are already doing stories about your
industry, go to
