A young good friend of mine has been informed that her agreement is not being renewed. She had lost her job. I felt really terrible about that and wondered just what I can do to help her out.
I was traveling home from the Las Vegas Money Show on May 15th and I read a great write-up in the Wall Street Journal, pg. W3, entitled, “A Lament for the Class of 2010.” That pertain the storyline of a young man who went to an Ivy League college, graduated, but is now living at home along with his parents and is now performing “as an intern at a street fair on the Lower East Side of New York City.”
The article moves on to say, “Over the upcoming few weeks, hundreds of thousands of Millennials is going to graduate from institutions of higher learning. They will certainly celebrate for several days, perhaps a number of weeks. After that they will enter into a labor force that neither wants nor needs them. They will enter an economic system where nearly 17% of persons aged 20 through 24 do not really have a job, and where two million college graduates are without a job. They will go into a world where they will compete tooth and nail for work opportunities as waitresses, pizza delivery men, file clerks, bouncers, trainee busboys, assistant baristas, and interns at bodegas.” Think about, spending over $200,000 on an Ivy League education and then operating at a job where you’re rivaling with high school dropouts.
This post rang a bell with me mainly because I had talked to a number of clients at the Money Show who will not be going to let their children or grand children want for being self sufficient. They’re educating them how in order to make revenue in the stock market. The primary objective, of course, is actually to make life simpler and easier for mom and dad through building a fund in order to support pay for college, however these people are also teaching their loved ones to become financially self-sufficient. And this brings me back to my young friend who just lost her job. Wouldn’t it be good if she learned how to generate money in the stock market and did not have to depend upon a job as a single source of revenue? Of course it could! Does it pay to go with the flow? I would have to say yes because that’s what we do. But the market gave us a head fake in mid-June that would have done LeBron James proud. There is no reason why you have to be in the gym to get a great workout. In fact, there are many people in superb shape who have never lifted a weight in their life! Here is a great workout that does not require any equipment (of course, having access to a pull up bar or similar would be great!). Hopefully it motivates you to get in a quick workout, especially when it’s tough to get to the gym.
While this is a “weight bearing” program, it is good to get in a light warmup. This could a slow 1 mile jog or some cardio on your favorite treadmill or rowing machine. If you are in good shape, go ahead and do your regular cardio workout first. It is always smart to be loosened up before any workout. And as always, consult your doctor before engaging in any new workout!
Let’s begin. One assumption I have made is that your know how to perform these exercises. If you are unsure, you can do a web search on any of them for instructions or even videos. First, let’s look at the exercises we will be using:
Push-up – you can vary the width of your hand placements. Also, elevating your feet mimics and incline press.
Squat – hold your hands on your hips, straight in front, or behind your head for balance.
Chair Dip – Sit on a chair or hard sofa with your hands next to thighs. Push upwards and bring the hips forward, legs straight so you are supporting your body weight. Bend the elbows and lower your body down until elbows are at 90 degrees. Push up for one rep.
Lunge – forward or sidestep lunges are good variations.
Pull-up – if a bar is available, a great back exercise.
Crunches – classic ab exercise also works your core.
Calf Raises – can be done on stair steps or an elevated surface; do them standing.

There are two ways you can traditionally do your workout. The first is the old classic, work your way down each exercise (order is up to you, but probably best to alternate between upper body and lower body) and do 2-3 sets of 10-15 reps. The second is to do 2-3 circuits where you do one set of an exercise then move on to the next. Going through the full list of exercises once is one circuit.
For these weight-free workouts, I think doing circuits is better because you can be more creative. You can mix in some cardio between circuits – maybe do 100 jumping jacks or skip rope for 3-5 minutes. Alternatively, you can try going through the entire circuits without any rest between sets.
As you can see, this type of workout is beneficial for lots of different people and situations. I tend to do this workout either when I’m on the road or need a break from the normal weight lifting routines. It is also great for beginners who want to build some strength and stamina before hitting the gym.

So you’ve tried all the diets and on numerous occasions starved yourself in the hope of losing weight…… and excuse me for being to the point. You no better off than when you started!! Correct me if I am wrong!
Below I have listed a number of points as to why your diets have not worked. Avoid the mistakes and really start losing weight:
• When dieting, your body believes it is starving and therefore starts to save fat, as this is the way it stores energy.
• Guilt, low Self-esteem and despair is normally accompanied when you ‘break’ your diet, and is often followed by ‘comfort eating’.
• Our bodies require proteins and vitamins to function to its optimal level, lowering our calorie intake per day therefore has an adverse effect on your body, making it more challenging for your body to attain its daily requirements.

• Your base metabolic rate is lowered when dieting, which in essence means you can eat less to keep you satisfied ( for the time period which you dieting ), however, when you do return to eating ‘normally’, the rate at which you put on weight is extremely fast, thus your weight being greater after you diet, than before.
• Eating Healthy does not mean starving!
• Your body chemistry changes when you diet, bad breath can be one of the side effects.
• Are you a smoker? If so, you probably ended up smoking more as a result of your diet…. And I’m sure we do not need to go into the effects of that.
• Muscle loss can be as a result of severe dieting… if this does occur from your heart, it can have severe consequences.
• Constipation is often accompanied by dieting. Therefore toxins and carcinogens are present longer within the bowels. Fruit and vegetables has a positive effect on the digestive system.

Today is Independence Day here in the States. Since I’m leaving for a good while, I feel it is necessary to write about why I love being an American.
Regardless of all the political spin and protesting (which is an altogether different reason why America is great), our Founding Fathers set up an effective government. We have a solid framework in the Constitution, which grants us freedoms only dreamt about in other parts of the world. Our system of checks and balances limits power and reduces corruption. Thanks to our system, if we don’t like something, we can change it. Vote for Giuliani, Obama, or Scooby Doo..it’s your right.
No, seriously..Vote Travis in ’08
Our military will defend us to the ends of the earth. American armed forces are unmatched the world over. Think about where our nation would be without the bravery exhibited in the Revolution or World War II. Yes, we’re in Iraq. And yes, many people don’t think we should be. But we’re there, so support our troops. We don’t get walked on, and our military is the reason why.
The next thing I love about my country is its capitalist economy. Hey, I have to act like a business student at some point. Anyone with enough resources can start a business, invest, and reap financial gain. The state (for the most part) allows market forces to mandate the successes and failures of a sector, business, or product. We control our own destiny. That individualism translates to a motivated workforce and an economic superpower on the global stage. Cha-Ching.
To stay within the context of this blog, I’m also thankful that I’m free to travel and further my education. The American government has sponsored my exchange experience in Germany, which in itself illustrates the endless opportunities Americans have in today’s world.
I’m proud to call myself American. I hope I’m able to represent my country well during my year in Germany.

Feeling content is a constant practice. In yoga we call it Santosha. It is a place of being at peace with exactly who you are and where you are. Sounds like a great place to be right? What about when life throws curve balls that smack us right in our content and peaceful face?
In my own life practice I am constantly flowing between waves of extreme contentment and unrest. Unrest from having a long list of goals and life dreams combined with the motivation to help them manifest. For a long time I was not ok with staying put, getting bored or waiting for things to happen “if it was meant to be”.
Practicing Santosha has helped me turn a frantic, stressed, “trying too hard to make things happen” frame of mind, to a steady pace of awareness and patience. Santosha has taught me to trust universal timing and enjoy the process of achieving goals one sweet moment at a time.
Grandma Isabel was practically the pin up model for Contentment Magazine. She single-handedly made lunches for all the kids before school, did every one’s laundry, knitted a cover for the living room couch, helped the kids with homework after school, made dinner, washed up and had everyone in bed before 9pm. All of this done while Grandpa Joe was traveling for work. Not once did I ever hear her complain or threaten to throw in the towel. She was absolutely sure of her role and expressed it without hesitation, doubt, rebellion or stress.
Like I said, Santosha is a practice so if you are feeling the very opposite of contentment it is ok and very human. These practices exist so we can enjoy the fullness of life. Have fun with it and stop to laugh at yourself when you are taking things way too seriously!

1. Are you content in this moment?
2. If not, why?
3. What needs to change for you to feel content?
4. What can you do to make those changes?

“Service to many, leads to greatness” is a quote and a truth that I shall never forget or take for granted, and is the ultimate mission of and purpose of my life. Service! There more I study this term, the more I understand its practice is indeed the key to freedom and prosperity. Why is service to many a pathway to greatness? As the term denotes and means to act in a way of helping and aiding someone in need, thereby attracting to the one who is serving and the one being served an energy of gratitude and fulfillment.
I am one that believes people should be an attitude, spirit, and desire to serve. It is in this spirit that I write this article. One of my mentors and spiritual teachers once said “the best and greatest religion on earth is treating people the way we want to be treated.” There’s no particular name given to this religion, just a profound practice of good. Everybody inherently wants to be treated with care and love. It is in this spirit that I choose to serve humanity.
One of the ways I serve is by answering the call and prayer of many who desire change financially and economically, which produces, on another level, spiritual and mental freedom. The freedom I speak of is the freedom the think outside of the proverbial box, to do some good in a world that is screaming for change.
