A Glass of Pomegranate Juice A Day May Keep the Doctor Away.

The pomegranate has been cultivated since before America was even a country yet very few Americans have ever eaten one, let alone drink its juice. This amazing exotic fruit is coming to light because of some interesting research into the antioxidant content of its juice. When compared to red wine and green tea, this amazing fruit is almost 3 times as powerful in protecting against free radical damage.

Antioxidants are naturally occurring substances that protect the body against free radicals. These important compounds are getting loads of attention since it has been shown that they reduce the numbers of these free radical molecules in the body. Free radicals are very reactive and in the body tend to ‘oxidize’ other molecules and cause damage. If you leave a piece of unprotected metal outside, the oxidation of weather will cause it to rust. A similar process happens in the body with free radicals. For example, they are thought to oxidize cholesterol into a form that is responsible for speeding up the hardening of arteries. In a study done at the Rambam Medical Center in Haifa, pomegranate juice has been shown to slow down cholesterol oxidation by almost 50 percent.

The juice of the pomegranate contains polyphenolics, tannins and anthocyanins – compounds that are thought to have a beneficial effect. In addition, the juice has many vitamins and minerals. It is rich in iron and vitamins A, C and E.

Many parts of the middle east and central Asia include this delicious fruit in their local cuisine. When you open a pomegranate you will be surprised to discover hundreds of bright red, juicy seed pods. The process of separating the seed pods from the white pulpy fruit is a chore that both children and young of old will delight in. The seed pods themselves taste a little bit like concentrated watermelon, but slightly sweeter and tangy. After opening one, you will quickly understand why they chose juice in their study and not the fruit itself. The pods easily burst open revealing the red juice. Caution here. The red juice will easily stain a lot of fabric so be careful when handling them.

The Western part of the world has been slow to adopt this wonderful fruit. It is still an exotic fruit that is more of a novelty than a staple like it is in other parts of the world. As more and more people begin consuming the protective juice, that is certain to change. An easy way to get it is in juice format and for fun, try picking up the fruit itself. Adding the seed pods to a salad is a wonderful way to enjoy them. Another way is to warm chopped walnuts in the juice and use the mixture to stuff tomatoes. No matter how you choose to eat pomegranates, try adding some to your diet today.

This is part 4 of the 4-part “Seven Keys to Permanent Weight Loss Success” series.

Key #6: Control your rewards

You’ve heard it before.

“Have a free day. Eat cheat meals.”

It sounds exciting, doesn’t it? For several days, you focus on ultimate discipline. You eat perfectly “clean” and don’t deviate from your diet … not even a little bit. But that’s because you have a great motivator … the promise of a day or meal where you can literally go “no-holds barred” and eat anything and everything in sight!

If you start to feel a twinge of guilt about your plans to assault the nearest buffet, you can simply flip to the pages of your favorite book and reassure yourself with the claim that this meal is necessary because it will boost your metabolism. It’s okay. Have it all. Chow away. Stuff yourself. You earned it, and it won’t make a difference, right?

Well … maybe, and then again, maybe not.

Cheat meals, free meals, reward meals, or whatever names you choose serve their purpose. I know that I would not have jumped headfirst into my first physique transformation if I did not know I could dive back into my binge habits once a week. And it worked … for awhile. I stuck to the program and was losing weight.

As time progressed, however, I noticed a few disturbing trends.

Monday to me was simply a countdown to the day I could eat anything I wanted. I was obsessed with it. Sure, I was eating clean throughout the week, but I could barely focus on anything else other than the idea that one day I would be going crazy. When that day came, I would actually plot out a course through the city so I could hit as many fast-food and donut joints as possible. We went to buffets and then hit the store and bought pounds of junk food to bring home and consume before midnight.

I realized that this wasn’t control. It wasn’t even reward. It was addiction. I thought back to when I quit cigarettes. How did I do it? Did I stop smoking six days out of the week, and then have a day where I smoked as much as I possibly could?

My body was giving me a few clues as well. I would feel bloated, disgusting, nauseous, and would often get sick after a free day with a cold or sinus infection. I felt like I spent the first half of the week recovering from the last day and the next half barely holding on to make it to the next splurge festival.

That’s when I decided it was time for things to change. I did not want to remain a slave to food. I could not imagine going on like that for the rest of my life, but this was supposed to be a permanent change, right? So I put my foot down.

I started with only allowing myself one or two reward meals per week. I called them reward meals because cheating is not what I was doing … I planned them, and deserved them. After several weeks of this, I noticed a significant change: I was no longer desperate for those meals, I was enjoying my healthy meals more, and when it was time to have a reward meal, I didn’t “waste” it on junk food or fast food … I’d go to a nice restaurant, sit down, and truly savor it.

Then I began to focus on my portion control. I was still over-eating that one meal, and I would feel like I had a hangover for the rest of the evening. So I made a pact with myself that I would never eat so much that I couldn’t have my other meals that day … in other words, even with a reward meal, I’d control my portion sizes so that I was still ready to eat again after a few hours.

This is when I suddenly found myself in the driver’s seat. The food was no longer in control, I was. I still enjoy pizza, ice cream, and many other treats. But now I control my rewards. I don’t have to go overboard. I don’t have to use one meal as an excuse to jump into a pattern of binge eating for the rest of the weekend. I can decide, ahead of time, what and when I will enjoy my reward, and then eat just enough to satisfy my psychological craving without going overboard. I switched from a free day festival (like smoking a carton of cigarettes) to controlled indulgence (like enjoying a nice cigar).

Here’s some final points to consider …

People are 250% more likely to suffer a heart attack after overeating
Most of the people I know who successfully lose weight and keep it off control their rewards and do not have a splurge meal
Your metabolism takes more than a day of splurging to kick into high gear … you are better off having a planned week of eating more calories, but from healthy foods

Key #7: Consistently refocus goals

This last key is perhaps the most important.

When I was digging through some old documents, I came across my original goals list. This was in 1999 when I began my fitness journey.

My main goal was to reach 40″ and I made a little side note, “if possible?”

Imagine that. A 44″ waist and I wasn’t even confident that I could lose four little inches!

After my first 12 weeks, I did not have a 40″ waist. I had a 38″ waist. I blew past my goal. So my new goal became a 36″ waist, which I new was my limit because I was “big-boned.” 36″ gave way to 32″ and at 6% body fat I was able to slip on a pair of 30″ jeans … over a foot (30 centimeters) had been trimmed from my waistline.

Goals can change, and that’s okay. Constantly refocus your goals. You may be capable of more than you imagine or currently allow yourself to be. Some of my goals that I created after learning the power to transform include running a half marathon and starting my own business, both of which I have accomplished and neither of which I would have thought possible in 1999.

To refocus your goals is to learn who you are. Maybe you thought you could lose 40 pounds of fat in three months, only to discover you lost 20. That’s fine. Set a new goal to lose 20 more over the next three months. Maybe you thought you would never bench press more than 100 pounds, but just did 110 last week. Great! Set a new goal to bench press 150 pounds. As you learn your limits (or rather, how to move past them) don’t be afraid to set your goals higher.

Don’t make the mistake, however, of falling into the trap of not having goals. This is what many people do … “When I reach 150 pounds, I’m going into maintenance.” That is an excuse to settle, and settling means going backwards and ultimately falling back into your old patterns. By consistently raising the bar, you are able to remain fit. Fitness is about action and movement, not about complacency and “settling.”

If you want to live a fit and healthy lifestyle, you must realize you are not on a journey to trim fat or increase your running speed. Ultimately, you are in pursuit of greatness.

Conclusion

These points that were created by people just like you have illustrated that permanent weight loss success is a process, not an event. It relates to the people you interact with, the mindset you adopt, and your core beliefs — even how willing you are to transform them. Studying these points is not enough. You must internalize them and take action. Only then can you become the journey to become your best.

Working from Home – A Blessing or a Curse?

“It pays to plan ahead. It wasn’t raining when Noah built the ark.”

If you are among the increasing number of individuals who work from home, you know that it has some wonderful benefits – no traffic and parking hassles, no office politics to drag you down, nobody looking over your shoulder, you can wear your house slippers to work, and you can set flexible work hours. But these same great benefits come with drawbacks – a sense of isolation, no external pressure to keep you motivated and on task, and no limit to your work hours. In essence, if you are not careful you can easily find yourself “at work” all the time.

With some good planning, it is possible to reap the benefits and reduce the drawbacks of working from a home office. Here are 10 tips to help:

1. Begin with the big picture in mind. Clarify what needs to happen in the next three years in order for you to feel like your life has progressed in the way that you want it to.

2. Plan and organize your week so you are focused on your priorities – both professional AND personal ones. Do you find yourself putting things off that are important to you because you have so many urgent tasks that need your attention? Do you look back at the end of the day with regret and wish that you had spent your time focusing on more important things … such as time with your family, time for self-care, or time to work on an important project that has no deadline? Being technically proficient in your business or profession will only get you so far … especially if your life gets out of balance in the process.

We are all accustomed to making appointments with other people, but not necessarily with ourselves. Because most of us tend to focus on that which is urgent, we tend to put off activities that are important but have no deadline. Schedule “protected time” — time during the day when you let calls go into voice mail and you don’t check email — so you can concentrate on activities that are important but not urgent.

W. Clement Stone once said, “No matter how carefully you plan your goals, they will never be more than pipe dreams unless you pursue them with gusto.” If interruptions in your home office make it difficult to concentrate, consider going somewhere else to work on important projects requiring concentration.

Be clear about how you choose to structure your week.

* How much free time do you choose to spend away from work?
* How much time do you choose to spend delivering the primary product or service you provide? Are you available evenings and weekends?
* How much time do you choose to spend doing the support activities important to your work?

All of these activities affect each other. If you neglect support activities (returning phone calls, responding to email, follow-up, filing, etc.), things will start slipping through the cracks. Then it becomes difficult to take free time to relax and rejuvenate. Without free time, the quality of what you deliver will suffer. It becomes a viscious cycle!

3. Limit the number of places you post reminders of activities requiring your attention. I recommend that you check these three places daily:

* Your tickler file — visit http://www.orgcoach.net/products/ticklerpic.html for more information about how to set this up.
* Your contact management program (such as ACT or Outlook) – This can contain your scheduled appointments with others, as well as your scheduled appointments with yourself and reminders for follow-up with others.
* E-mail – Flag the items you need to come back to and do something with.

4. Create a Perhaps List . Most people have stashes of lists in multiple places – several legal pads containing to-do lists, sticky notes plastered on the computer monitor, the wall, the desktop, etc. Instead of writing these ideas down in multiple places, collect all of them in one place. Visit: http://www.orgcoach.net/perhaps.html to see a sample Perhaps List.

5. Schedule 10-15 minutes at the end of each workday to organize your work space and review your plans for tomorrow. Psychologists have found that we enjoy our non-work hours much more when we leave the office with an organized desk and a plan for the following day. This is also a good time to check your tickler file for the next day so you can begin mentally preparing for what needs your attention tomorrow.

6. Schedule time with other people. Working from a home office can be isolating. If you need more human contact, build in opportunities that will help you feel more connected to others. Join a service club or networking group, or treat yourself to having lunch or playing a sport once a week with a friend, colleague, or client…whatever it takes to feel more connected.

7. Schedule weekly “admin” time to tend to routine activities that you know need to be done regularly – filing, checking email, returning phone calls, invoicing, paying bills, etc. Although these activities are important, they are generally not urgent…but if they get neglected long enough they will become urgent when you cannot find something you need or a bill does not get paid by the due date.

NOTE: Not all hours are created equal. Pay attention to your own body rhythms. Schedule your “high brain” activities (things requiring creativity, for example) during your best time of day, and schedule the “low brain” activities (the auto pilot stuff) during your low energy time of the day.

8. Say NO to activities that are not important to you. If you need a reminder of what to say YES to, consider using a daily checklist and a PageUp Copy Holder that can hold your checklist upright (see photo at http://www.orgcoach.net/products/tickle.html#pageup) so it does not get buried on your desk.

9. Trim the F.A.T. – File, Act, Toss. When you open the mail, immediately make a decision to either FILE away for future reference, ACT on it, or TOSS it. Visit: http://www.orgcoach.net/trimthefat.html to learn more about this process, or participate in our fr*ee Buried in Paper teleclasses held monthly.

10. Create a filing system which will enable you to find things quickly, no matter where you filed it. The number one reason people pile instead of file is a fear of never finding it again. You’re invited to participate in a fr*ee monthly Find Anything in 5 Seconds teleclass where we’ll show you how you can file your papers so you’ll find them in 5 seconds or less.

Watch Out For Allergies With Baby Laundry!

free  Comments Off on Watch Out For Allergies With Baby Laundry!

So you’re having a baby. You think you’ve thought of everything, but at the same time you’re terrified that you’ve missed something. Here’s one thing you may or may not have thought of: laundry. Yes, you know that you will have more, but have you considered the basic differences between your baby’s laundering needs and yours? If you regularly use perfumed detergents, bleach, or fabric softener, your laundering habits may need some reform.

Gone are the days of washing clothes just because they smell. Your baby is going to burp up stuff you’ve never thought of, and your laundry piles are going to skyrocket. This is only one new concern, however, since your baby’s skin is much more sensitive to chemicals than you and your spouses’ grown up skin. Laundering the baby’s clothing in detergents that are free of perfumes and dyes is one quick way to help ensure that your baby does not get unnecessary discomfort from irritating chemicals. There are detergents formulated specifically for babies, but for the most part as long as you stay away from perfume and dye heavy products, your baby should be just fine. There are of course rare cases in which the baby has specific allergies, in which case it is probably best to find one brand that works for your baby’s skin and stick with it. Unfortunately for your baby, this may mean a short trial and error process. As with food allergies, just keep a keen eye out and make sure you seek immediate medical treatment when you are concerned about anything.

Another thing that is important when laundering baby clothing is to make sure that you launder any cloth diapers separately. If you are using cloth diapers, you may think of the obvious reason: these items of clothing are obviously much more soiled than the average baby clothing item. It is best to launder these items twice: once in bleach with a double rinse, and then a second time with just vinegar during the last rinse cycle. This is important because not only is the baby using these items a lot more frequently (so they get a lot more wear), but also they are the closest to the baby’s very sensitive skin. So making sure that cloth diapers are as allergen free as possible is a key factor in keeping your baby comfortable and happy.

The last item on our laundry agenda will keep your laundry service or electric company well fed, and you plenty busy. As your baby quickly outgrows each new item of clothing, and a new one needs to be purchased to replace it, the new items should all be washed before being put on the baby. That includes outerwear and bath accessories, but is especially important for things that you buy a lot of, like undershirts, socks, and onesies. The first couple of months are particularly crucial in determining what kind of laundering ritual is best for your new addition. This is also a time in which you will be getting used to a lot of specifics about your new baby. Make sure no matter how you launder your baby’s clothes, you keep a good eye out for possible allergic reactions and rashes. A comfortable baby is a much happier baby.

What To Do When Your Baby Won’t Wear Clothes!

free  Comments Off on What To Do When Your Baby Won’t Wear Clothes!

A lot of time and energy goes into clothing your baby during the first year. From the color debate, to the rapid speed at which most infants outgrow their clothing, new parents have their plates full with keeping their babies clean, comfortable and clothed. So what do you do when all of a sudden, the baby doesn’t want to wear any clothes at all? How do you deal with the exhibitionist stage of your toddler?

At about fourteen months, your baby will most likely want to romp around in the buff. This is completely normal, and in fact could help a little bit with potty training. Obviously, however, it can be a bit troublesome when trying to introduce social norms, and of course when having company without children over for coffee or lunch. So how does a new parent deal with a naked toddler?

The best thing to do is not discourage this behavior entirely. Set limits about where and when your toddler can be naked and enforce them. It is tedious, but repeatedly re-dressing your toddler may be the best way to get the message across. Keep an especially close eye on your toddler in public. Not just because of the obvious, but because you don’t want to lose expensive items like shoes or jackets.

Setting a “naked time” where your child is free to roam around the house for an hour or so a day is a good way to set limits on acceptable behavior. Make sure this time is a time when you can be around to monitor them very closely and make sure that they don’t hurt their more exposed areas. Also, it’s probably best if naked time is a time when your home doesn’t see a lot of traffic. Your toddler may be comfortable with their naked time, but friends and neighbors may not be.

Use your child’s newfound freedom to encourage them to choose their own clothing. Let your toddler dress him or herself a couple of times a week as a special treat. Soon they might like to get dressed as much as they enjoy disrobing. Make getting dressed fun, and stress the importance of where and when it is okay to take off your clothes. This way your child begins to understand the important role that clothing plays in the day-to-day life of grown ups.

The most important thing to remember is not to let your discipline about clothing become about your child’s body. It is easy to make your child feel ashamed of their naked body, even if it is not intended. This kind of discomfort can go a long way in determining how your child feels about their body in the long term, right up into adulthood. Making play dates for right before or after naked time can be a good way to demonstrate for your child the difference between private time and public time, and let them begin making their own boundaries in their mind. This time in their life is a lot about exploration. So even though you’ve been there, it’s important to let them figure out some stuff on their own.

Asset Protection And Fraudulent Transfer

free  Comments Off on Asset Protection And Fraudulent Transfer
Nov 202020

According to information provided by http://www.plan-my-estate.com an estate planning and asset protection resource web site, a Fraudulent Transfer aka Fraudulent Conveyance is a transfer which a debtor makes for the purpose of defeating a creditor’s collection efforts against the debtor. This typically happens when, say, a debtor attempts to “sell” everything to his wife, cousin or business partner for $5 to keep his stuff out of the hands of his creditors. If the court figures out that the transaction is a sham to defeat the creditor, the court will set aside the transaction and make the person holding the assets give them to the creditor. Basically, Fraudulent Transfer Law is this: You can’t do anything which would impair the rights of your unsecured creditors, if you do then the courts will simply ignore what you have done.

There are thousands of individuals and companies that, through e:mails or via internet web sites, offer to help you protect your assets from creditors, ex spouses and or taxing authorities. Many of these individuals and businesses help you protect your assets by having you take actions that can or will put you in violation of the Uniform Fraudulent Transfer Act. This could, in the long run, not only end up causing you to lose the assets that you were trying to protect but also cost you additional money in court costs, attorney’s fees or collection costs. Additionally, if you had a family member or friend help you, he or she could end up in court or having his or her credit harmed by having a judgment entered against him or her.

Many of these asset protection schemes involve transfering assets to someone you trust, a spouse, other family member, friend or a business that you form. As far as I can determin, if the creditor can prove that the transfer was done in order to avoid creditors, then under the Uniform Fraudulent Transfer Act the creditor has several remedies depending on the circumstances. These remedies can include causing a judgment to be entered against both you and the transferee, causing the property transfered to be attached or levied upon or causing a lein to be placed against the property. There are other remedies set by statute. The one thing that all of these remedies have in common is that you, the transferee or both of you could be held liable for the costs of obtaining and enforcing the remedy.

Note: Another thing to think about. Over the years I have been involved in numerous asset search and recovery matters where the person
that the bank account, collectibles, stocks, bonds, real estate or other assets were transfered to ended up closing out, selling or otherwise transfering or encumbering the assets, leaving the original owner with nothing. No matter how much you trust someone today you never know what the future will bring.

Other services offer to set up a revocable living trust. They state that the assets then will belong to the trust and be protected from your creditors. As any competent attorney will advise you, this theory is completely false. Since the assets placed in the trust are yours and since you control the trust then you and the trust are the same thing and a creditor can go after any assets placed in the trust. While a revocable living trust may not be a fraudulent transfer, neither is it a way to protect your assets from creditors.

I am not saying that all asset protection companies are worthless or might get you into trouble. I assume that there are some excellent and knowledgeable asset protection companies out there. I just would feel safer getting advice directly from an attorney.

The best way to find out if your assets can be protected and if protecting them is worth the cost is to seek the advice of an attorney who specializes is asset protection, debt collection, estate planning or, in certain cases, bankruptcy law. In some cases the attorney will provide a free or low cost consultation.

Note: I am not an attorney and none of the foregoing should be construed as legal advice. This article is written strictly as my opinion based on life experiences through both my personal life and my work as a private investigator dealing with attorneys in asset search and recovery matters. As in all matters of law you should always consult an attorney before taking on any legal endeavor.

Do you find getting Targeted Traffic a mystery?

Do you find getting Targeted Traffic a mystery? Let me show you how to sort that out once and for all.

Back in the good old days when the Internet was still young and the people browsing around were only looking for a handful of things, in those days any traffic was good traffic. All you had to do was sell products or advertising and due to the lack of diversity in the people visiting, you could quite easily make a sale.

Those glory days are long forgotten. Statistics have shown that in the last couple of years, even if you got 20000 hits a month you could still sell hardly anything and not make any money….

There is only one type of traffic worth anything in any successful internet business. TARGETED TRAFFIC. Knowing not only the kind of visitors you want at your site but most of all the kind you don’t want.

Now lets get started with some of the best known, tried and tested methods used by the best to get consistent reliable traffic.

The first and probably most reliable method…. Paying for links. As you know Google or any search engine ranks your page highly if it has links to other websites with high traffic going to them, Why? Why would a website with stacks of traffic promote something it doesn’t believe will make it money… They run a business too.

So you might ask “Why would a big site with lots of traffic give you a beginner a link?” Well as I always say ASK… It won’t hurt.

Another method that works quite well is to keep in regular contact with the webmaster giving him good feedback about his site and once he’s buttered up and in a good mood mention to him that you have a site in a similar market to him and ask for a link. Well if both of those fail one sure way is the time-honoured principle of bribery. Ask for a link. Then if you get rejected make him an offer and you’ll be surprised how many will give in….

Another amazing method which is still horribly under-utilised is the idea of giving away free stuff.

– Create short ebook or reports on specific topics in highly specialised fields that will appeal to your super hungry market.
– Add your URL to every page in a special header or footer as well as on the title page and at the end of the book.
– Then give it away with unrestricted, unlimited reprint and resale rights to the book for FREE.

Now this method gets used a lot in the “how to” crowd but is hardly used in any other field. In fact 90% of the niche markets out there don’t use it at all. If you tell someone that they can do whatever they want with these well then these book are going to spread like wildfire and thousands are going to be given out, now that’s what we call “Viral Advertising”

Now once you have all this Targeted traffic flowing to your site and you are making sales like crazy just think of all the possibilities.

Internet Marketing is changing at a rapid rate and one method used today could be obsolete tomorrow that’s why you need to hone your skills and make sure to keep one step in front of your competition.

Best of luck with all your future prospects.
Regards.
Ryan Blake.

Playing creative games for fun: a great way to relax

free  Comments Off on Playing creative games for fun: a great way to relax
Nov 182020

Play is a state of mind that is safe, inquisitive and exists in the moment. It is also a bodily state of relaxation and an uplifting and engaged emotional state. Some say play is a spiritual state of profound connection and joy. Play can be something we do by ourselves or with others, but it is also something we can watch others do. Play is often described as a time when we feel most alive, yet we often take it for granted and may completely forget about it. Play can be entirely positive, or have a negative.

Most people believe that play is unproductive, and therefore inferior to “productive” activities. Perhaps this is because we equate play with feeling –happy joyous feeling –that traditionally is seen as less important than thinking. Many of us have lists, at home and at the office, prioritizing tasks by how productive they are. When we run out of time, we cut the fun stuff and do the “productive” stuff because we may feel guilty or bad if we play hooky or goof off by playing a game of golf or chess, taking a hike in the woods or daydreaming for an hour. New research on the brain contradicts this cultural dismissal of play, by emphasizing the importance of feelings and the necessity of feeling safe and relaxed in order to think clearly and productively. Play teaches us how to
manage and transform our “negative” emotions and experiences; it supercharges learning, and is a foundational factor in good mental and physical health. And, it can make work more pleasurable.

How can play trigger the flow state?

Psychiatrist and writer Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, (pronounced “chicks send me high”) studied play in Sidney, Australia and described it as a flow state that requires just the right balance of challenge and opportunity. If the game is too hard or too easy, it loses its sense of pleasure and fun. Maintaining a flow state in games with others requires all participants, regardless of age or ability, to feel challenged, but not overwhelmed. Csikszentmihalyi s research has been undertaken and confirmed in several countries, and now reaches 250,000 surveys. In the flow state we feel:

Why is play an important part of our lives?

Humans are designed by nature to play, and have played throughout evolution. Playfulness is an inborn ability that is hardwired into our genetic code. Play is part of how humans have adapted and survived everywhere on Earth, from the tropics to the great deserts to the Arctic Circle. We want to play because it is instinctive and fundamental to our existence; it is one of the evolutionary mechanisms that enabled us to
develop as a species. Playing helps us survive by connecting us to other human beings and to sources of energy and excitement within ourselves. Play is simultaneously a source of calmness and relaxation, as well as a source of stimulation for the brain and body.

Play will be important to our future. Some futurists have said that we’ll need to be more inventive, creative, and flexible to handle the tasks, flow and rhythm of life in this century and beyond. A sure (and fun) way to develop these abilities is to play – with your children and grandchildren, your officemates and friends.

Why is it important to play at work?

When researchers follow pre-teen children s attitude about play, they discovered that some children called almost everything they did “play” while others called almost everything they did “work”. Reconnecting with the children at the end of adolescence, the children who thought of everything as play were more successful and happier in school and were more content socially than the people who saw everything as “work”.

Success at work does not depend on the amount of time you work. It depends upon the quality of work, and the quality of work depends on the level of well-being of the workers. The level of well-being depends significantly on the how often they replenish themselves through play in any of its forms. Work is where we spend much of our time. That is why it is especially important for us to play during work. Without some recreation, our work suffers. Most of us have been working faster, harder, and smarter, and with diminishing free time. We first thought that working faster, harder, and smarter would handle our increased workload, but that is not the case. We still got behind and became chronically overwhelmed. When the project you’re working on hits a serious glitch (as they frequently do), heading out to the basketball court with your colleagues to shoot some hoops and have a few laughs does a lot more than take your mind off the problem. If basketball isn’t your cup of tea, having a model airplane contest, telling stories, or flying kites in the parking lot will also allow your relationship to the problem to shift and enable you to approach it from a new perspective. Interjecting play into the work cycle: keeps you sane and functional during times of stress; refreshes your mind and body; renews hope; triggers creativity; and increases energy.
