Neuro-nutrition gives us the answers.
This series of articles brings you right up to date with the ways to help your brain, boost your memory and avoid serious disintegration of the brain systems through diseases like Alzheimer’s. In this article we will look at a free source of memory power and discover that our old friends the Vitamins hold some turbo-charging characteristics.
Vitamin B6 is the best
Without this vitamin we suffer some very familiar ills. Being irritable, confused, tired out, depressed and unable to concentrate are all symptoms which can point to a deficiency in this nutrient. It also plays a big part in supporting the memory processes. Vitamin B6 is necessary to make the neurotransmitters such as serotonin (brings about a calm/OK feeling, dopamine (gives us an uplift) and adrenaline (energy boost). Without enough Vitamin B6 to help the serotonin to synthesize we can really drop down in mood so far we will become very depressed.
The older you get the more you need it. People in their seventies were given 20mg of Vit B6/day and they improved in every type of memory functioning; short term, long term and speed of retention. Interestingly middle aged people did even better on it and showed very marked signs of improvement in all their mental processes, including feeling better about themselves.
How much of it is good for you?
More than 50 milligrams/day and less than 200mg/day seem to work best though you always take advice from naturopaths or your doctor.
Where can you easily get it from?
Fruit and green vegetables are a good source and that fits really well with the ‘new’ Stone Age diet you should be eating if you really want to look after your brain.
Supplements in the form of tablets can be very helpful as they are easier for the stomach to digest as we get older. So if you want a boost eat more greens and also take some supplements. You should notice the difference to your mood and memory quite quickly.

We quite often need to remember chunks of text – perhaps we have to give a speech or are revising for a test. This can be a big challenge for many people, especially if you feel under pressure about the situation you have to do this for. However it is possible to learn to memorise text quickly and easily.
First you need to familiarize yourself with the text by reading it through – BUT – you have to do this as if you are reading it to someone else rather than reading it over quickly to yourself.
As you read it out to your imaginary friend think of questions you have about the bits you don’t understand so well. Write those questions down
Give yourself an instruction to remember certain parts of the information by telling yourself to do this and writing down a brief note of the part you are committing to memory.
Once you have become familiar with the text condense the notes you have made into one word phrases so that one word contains a lot of information. What is the key word for that ‘bunch’ of information? List these keywords.
Next take each word and form a vivid picture of each one
Lastly form those pictures into a story you will be able to run through in your mind quickly. Make it a short story and preferably a silly one too. So ludicrous that you will easily recall it because it makes you laugh. Remember too to put plenty of strong action in it which will make it dynamic in your brain and much easier to replay.
Another alternative is to do all of that up to the point of having keywords for your chunks of information and then peg these keywords to your Room List. Then a quick run through your Room List will immediately reactivate the keywords and they will quickly reactivate all the chunked information you are memorising. Then – voila! Job done.
Finally to help your short term memory here is a strange tip for you to do. Watch cartoons! Yep – that’s right. Sit down and get your fill of Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck. Spend at least half an hour watching them and as you do this you will be super charging your imagination. As you know imagination is one of the key principles of memory improvement and things like seeing the silliness and exaggerated situations in cartoons will open the doors of your imagination and show you how you can turn situations into colourful, active, memorable pictures. Have fun!

I know that many of you will be thinking what will meditation do for me, why is it so important and of course ‘I don’t have time to sit around trying to clear my head, I’m busy’. Well let’s be honest here, do you suffer from stress, now think about this a little more, because the answer is yes and if you’re not sure about that read on and think a little more…and don’t forget to check out my recommendation for easy stress relief.
Why Are We All Stressed?
With modern day living comes the hectic and ever demanding pace of live, it’s no wonder that many of us feel stressed and overworked and how many of us take this home with us, how many others feel the impact of the stress we feel?
Our stress and tiredness of everyday life lead us to the feelings of unhappiness, frustration and a lack of patience when it comes to dealing with even the most simple every day routines. Not to mention the impact that all this has on our health, the tiredness that we feel, the ever nagging inner voice reminding us that we need to do this and that and the other. Or the demands of our boss, our clients, our family and friends all add up to making life one big stress ball.
‘I’m stressed out’, ‘work is one big stress’, ‘I’m under too much stress’, ‘the kids are stressing me out’, these are all phrases that we are all too familiar with and it is also an acceptable part of every day life.
How Do I Define My Stress?
Stress is hard to define as it means different things to different people; however, one thing that is perfectly clear to all of us is that stress is a negative emotion, negative energy as opposed to positive.
Stress can be both physical and mental. Physical stress could be the result of a lack of sleep, or a poor diet and even an effect of an illness. Mental stress can be worrying about money, or how you’re going to survive retirement, or from experiencing a devastatingly emotional event such as the death of a family member, or being fired from work.
Our Natural Stress Response System
But did you know that much of our stress comes from less dramatic everyday routines. Obligations and pressures which are both physical and mental are not always that obvious to us and in response to these daily strains our body automatically invokes a stress response which floods your body with chemicals which increases your blood pressure, your heart rate, the blood flow to your muscles, your metabolism and your respiration. All of these responses are natural reactions so that our bodies are ready to react quickly and effectively under high pressure situations, termed fight or flight. Now whilst a stress response is useful in true emergency situations when you need to be on alert, it can considerably wear your body down when constantly active.
We are all continuously reacting to stressful situations, which is termed stress response, but without making adjustments in our lives to counter the effects. Stress can cause physical, emotional and behavioral disorders which affect our health, vitality and peace of mind; and of course it also affects our personal and professional relationships. Stress is also the key cause to many minor illnesses such as insomnia, headaches and backaches on top of the life threatening diseases such as high blood pressure and even heard disease.
It is also very true that every person handles stress differently, take for example a major life decision like changing careers, or moving house. I know some of you are cringing at the thought, but I also know that some of you would relish the thought. Whatever may be overwhelming to some people might actually be seen as a welcome change to others. An even simpler example is sitting in traffic, some people find this too much to tolerate tooting their horns and screaming out for more coffee, whilst others just take it in their stride maybe with the help of a little music, or a happy thought.
So what’s the answer? Well, aside from the inexhaustible amount of drugs available to reduce stress, which include free side effects I may add, there’s one very simple and natural way to reduce stress that takes 10 to 20 minutes of your day and has no side effects, meditation.
Our Natural Relaxation Response System
Earlier I mentioned that the secret to reducing your stress is by making adjustments in your life to counter the effects of stress, well this is done by evoking a relaxation response within you.
A relaxation response is a state of deep rest that is the opposite of the stress response. The relaxation response brings your body back into balance by deepening your breathing, reducing the stress chemicals in your body, slowing down your heart rate and relaxing your muscles. It also increases your energy, improves your focus, relieves headaches and other aches and pains, heightens your problem solving skills and boosts motivation and productivity and the best news is that with a little practice anyone can gain from these benefits.
Recommendations
As many of you out there are new to meditation and I am certain that there are also many of you who don’t want to get into depth of how to meditate or what form of meditation to use and want a quick head start, I would recommend you begin with an affordable audio meditation, check out morphogeneticmeditation for links to free audio’s to get you started.
also increases energy and focus, combats illness, relieves aches and pains, heightens problem-solving abilities, and boosts motivation and productivity. Best of all – with a little practice – anyone can reap these benefits.
Remember, each person handles stress differently. Some people actually seek out situations which may appear stressful to others. A major life decision, such as changing careers or buying a house, might be overwhelming for some people, while others may welcome the change. Some find sitting in traffic too much to tolerate, while others take it in stride. The key is determining your personal tolerance levels for stressful situations. Stress can cause physical, emotional and behavioral disorders which can affect your health, vitality, peace-of-mind, as well as personal and professional relationships. Too much stress can cause relatively minor illnesses like insomnia, backaches, or headaches, and can contribute to potentially life-threatening diseases like high blood pressure and heart disease.
Stress can also be mental: when you worry about money, a loved one’s illness, retirement, or experience an emotionally devastating event, such as the death of a spouse or being fired from work. However, much of our stress comes from less dramatic everyday responsibilities. Obligations and pressures which are both physical and mental are not always obvious to us. In response to these daily strains your body automatically increases blood pressure, heart rate, respiration, metabolism, and blood flow to you muscles. This response, is intended to help your body react quickly and effectively to a high-pressure situation.
With the hectic pace and demands of modern life, many people feel stressed and over-worked. It often feels like there is just not enough time in the day to get everything done. Our stress and tiredness make us unhappy, impatient and frustrated. It can even affect our health. We are often so busy we feel there is no time to stop and meditate! But meditation actually gives you more time by making your mind calmer and more focused. A simple ten or fifteen minute breathing meditation as explained below can help you to overcome your stress and find some inner peace and balance.
Meditation can also help us to understand our own mind. We can learn how to transform our mind from negative to positive, from disturbed to peaceful, from unhappy to happy. Overcoming negative minds and cultivating constructive thoughts is the purpose of the transforming meditations found in the Buddhist tradition. This is a profound spiritual practice you can enjoy throughout the day, not just while seated in meditation.

Are you looking for something to do in the sprawling city of London that won’t cost a penny? The capital of England is well-endowed with museums that embrace a wide range of subjects and many have one thing in common – they cost nothing to get into.
Even better, the museums are great for kids, giving lots of opportunities to touch as well as to look and offering a range of structured activities such as themed trails.
Here’s a list of a few museums you can get into for free and which should provide several days of entertainment and education:
The British Museum – thousands of years of human history are squeezed into room after room at this world-famous institution. The dramatic hall of Egyptian sculpture is not to be missed, and because most children love the macabre they be pleased to meet the long-dead Egyptians ‘Bones’ and ‘Ginger’.
The Natural History Museum – the dinosaur exhibition is always popular, but be prepared to wait because there’s almost always a queue. Kids enjoy the creepy-crawly display and gaze in awe at the life-sized blue whale hanging from the ceiling.
The Science Museum – this museum has plenty of buttons to push and screens to looks at, along with a huge range of machines, some very old. The first true railway locomotive, Stephenson’s ‘Rocket’, stands proudly on display. The basement houses plenty of hands-on activities to keep the kids busy all day.
Victoria & Albert Museum – a showcase of art and design from around the world. It might not appeal to kids but is a great place to savour the best of world culture. Save some for another time – there’s just too much to take in on one day.
Museum of Childhood at Bethnal Green – part of the V&A which focuses on kids and will have plenty to keep them occupied.
Museum of London – the story of the great city is laid out, from prehistoric times right through to medieval squalor, the Great Fire of 1666, and the German bombings in World War Two.

Following a gluten free diet can seem difficult at first. How do you replace wheat? Rice is probably one of the best answers. Why rice? Because it is a staple food throughout a large geographical area, and it is the mainstay for many cultures.
There is no shortage of ideas on how to create fantastic and varied gluten-free meal ideas with rice! Japan, southern China, Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Burma, south India are examples of countries that use rice as their mainstay. These are countries where you can live an almost perfect gluten-free diet without even trying.
Notice: I said “almost perfectly gluten-free”.” There are small amounts of wheat in some of the cooking, found in soy sauce for example. If you have a gluten allergy or wheat allergy, the amount of wheat in soy sauce and other minor ingredients may not be enough to affect you. If you are celiac however, this may present a problem. But with so many cultures, geographical areas and cooking styles following a rice-based diet, you can simply choose a different country, India for example, where they do not use soy sauce and where you can eat rice that is dependably gluten-free.
At home, you can easily modify Chinese and Thai rice-based recopies to either exclude soy sauce (not recommended) or simply cook with gluten-free soy sauce.
Rice is a remarkably versatile food. It can be made into a main course or a desert, the flour can be used for baking, and there are some types of gluten free beer that are made with rice. Rice does have limitations. It is not so easy to make bread with it, although it can be mixed with other flours and xanthan gum to create a loaf.
Using rice four in baking produces excellent results, but goes stale quite quickly. You don’t have to use rice for everything, but you can certainly base most of your cooking on it, and eat your yummy gluten-free baking quickly before it can go stale.
By seeking out rice-based recipes, you can follow a tasty and nutritious gluten-free diet with ease.

Faith is the key. The power of belief is at the heart of making any success system work for you. Absolute faith in your power to achieve limitless wealth, success and self fulfillment is that hidden secret that you have been searching for.
“I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, “Move from here to there” and it will move.”
Matthew 17:20
I rarely quote Scripture and I do not follow modern religions as they are little more than distortions of the truths of the many enlightened souls who have passed before us. However, if you read the ancient texts, you will find in all religions that faith has been at the heart of all spiritual teachings. “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believeth.”
Mark 9:23 or from the Buddha: “It is your mind that creates this world.”
Have faith and the world is yours. It is the power of faith that underlies the creation of limitless wealth, success, self fulfillment and the manifestation of miracles. The famous martial artist Bruce Lee once said: “I believe and I become.”
This is the real power that underlies the manifestation of success in our lives.
One must also understand that faith is not just personal in nature, there is also a global aspect of faith and there must be a congruency between your personal and the global aspect of faith for it to be effective in manifesting your goals and desires. If you have faith in yourself that you are worthy of becoming wealthy and successful, you must also have faith that all mankind is also deserving of wealth and success. If, however, you are negatively judgmental of others, then your faith is incomplete and manifestation of your dreams will never happen in your reality. Absolute faith in yourself and all of mankind is at the heart of manifestation.
Someday, I pray that it is in my lifetime, all of mankind is going to experience a great evolution in consciousness and fear, poverty and war will be a part of our ancient past. In the meantime, have absolute faith (global and personal) and you will manifest in your life all the wealth, success and self fulfillment that you so rightly deserve.
